golf mk3 1.8 se starting problem
when it is cold outside my golf mk3 1.8 se ADZ engine, does not start first time. when turning the ignition i get a whirring noise. if i turn off the ignition and try to start again it works fine. have recently replaced ignition coil, checked ht leads and dizzy. suspect battery or starter motor problem.anyone know for sure what it might be?
Re: golf mk3 1.8 se starting problem
The "whirring noise" is likely to be the starter motor turning but not engaging. I'd have to look up how VW starters work to take it any further. I can't remember if there are parts (pinion on starter being the likely one) that can stick or not move as far as they should.
Re: golf mk3 1.8 se starting problem
Thanks Bob, have been told that starter motors on this model are susceptable to dust from either the brake pads or clutch (cant remember which) getting into them. so maybe i will try and give it a good clean.
Re: golf mk3 1.8 se starting problem
Clutch dust would make sense. (Clutch is attached to flywheel which is where starter ring is.) Brake dust would be a hell of a problem. :D
