Newbie with a couple of questions
My temperature gauge never moves from cold.....even on a long journey. The climatic control is never pumping out hot air when set manually so i am wondering if the engine is getting up to the correct temperature. I suspect a faulty thermostat. Can anyone else with a 1.9 TDi confirm if the needle points midway in the range on theirs?....(approx 90degrees)
Re: Newbie with a couple of questions
HI newbie my temperature gauge runs at bang on 90 & never moves. I am having probs with heater as well, but rad is partially blocked. sounds like yours could be thermostat stuck open.Best of luck.
Re: Newbie with a couple of questions
Hello there, The most likley fault with your temp gauge is your sensor it is quite common for them to play up and are quite simple to change,a new one would be probably in stock in your local dealer for around £28.00 plus a new sealing ring, this should sort out your fault, what you could do to check is to unplug the sensor and clean conns and replace, it might start working again but a new sensor is the answer Best Wishes
Re: Newbie with a couple of questions
Surely it must be the thermostat. Unless the passat tdi cooling system is different than any other car i have had before..
The sensor should only tell you the temp of the coolant. As the heater is not working then it sounds as if the coolant is not getting up to temperature.. Which in turn leads to Hitachi's prediction.. I second that!
I don't have my haynes to hand so can't tell you where it is.. usually they are mounted in the top hose of the cylinder block and are usually mounted right next to the engine.so follow the tiop hose of the rad back to the block and you should see a housing where you can get in..
Make sure you get some G12 coolant as you will have to use that, do not use any other as bad things happen.

Re: Newbie with a couple of questions
Thanks for the replies. I'd better update you all.
Having owned my passat for month i have clocked up a few more miles. I can tell you that the engine is getting up to temperature. How do i know this?..... the gauge actually worked on a couple of occasions. It does seems to point to the temp sensor being troublesome.
I haven't got around to changing it yet, because i'm unsure where it is!!
I've found the thermostat housing on the the back of the head, but it has 3 sensors fitted. Anyone know which one it is???
Re: Newbie with a couple of questions
Hello There, Theses three sensors you see are not sensors at all but are coolant pre heaters.the sensor you require has a black plug with four wires on it and usually has a blue coloured sensor, the replacement sensor colour will probably be different colour and is usually found in the coolant plastic hose outlet housing, have a good look and you will soon find. Best Wishes
Re: Newbie with a couple of questions
Hi
Start the car and allow to warm up check the visable cooling hoses and check if they heat up at all? Obviously be careful as some will be very hot!!! and I know stating the obvious watch out for the cooling fan.
I suspect a thermostat problem as well based on the above diagnosis, however in the past my brother had a 406 with climate control which only blew cold air. The car however had no problems getting up to temp (ie 90) so there is always a possibility of a sensor problem.
My passat used to have a "bouncing" temp gauage.......... so I know the sensors have trouble.
Is the cooling fan kicking when the car is at idle?
Regards
Richard
Re: Newbie with a couple of questions
Found the sensor and sprayed some wd40 around the contacts, slotted the plug back in place and still no temperature gauge working. I haven't noticed the fan coming on.....still think it's sensor though.
Got to call the motor factors tomorrow and price up a sensor. I guess this is going to be a main dealer part??? but i'll try my local parts place first.
Re: Newbie with a couple of questions
why G12 coolant? ive been using standard
anti frezze for the last 4 years with no problems
