Re: 130PD how smooth/rough?
The 1.9tdi is a bit agricultural, mine vibrates a lot at low speeds and you can definitely feel the engine when you are pushing it.
If it pulls well and feels powerful then I wouldn't worry to much, it sounds like yours is normal.
I also get an average of 43 mpg across all types of driving. i think thats pretty good really.
if you drive much above 70 on the motorway then the fuel consumption does fall off quite quickly. keep it in the 65-75 bracket and you'l get into the 50's
Re: 130PD how smooth/rough?
Speeding up & slowing down really hits fuel economy - if I set c/c at 70 and properly leave it alone with maybe gentle short increases I can average mid 50's mpg over a journey of mainly motorway. If I get on country roads then a journey average can easily go to low 40's.
The engine's are pretty noisy especially if you're stood in front.
Re: 130PD how smooth/rough?
I've just replaced my "injector loom" which has made my low engine speed vibration much better, but it's still there and the fuel economy is still on the low side.
My next plan is to check the cam timing is correct as someone suggested on my thread: https://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/s...d.php?t=110940
Re: 130PD how smooth/rough?
I have a 140k miles 130 Pd Estate and have never had vibration as an issue. It is chipped by a reasonable 25bhp which made the engine more enjoyable to drive and even smoother, pulling in a higher gear and the extra torque in particular pulling cleanly from low revs.
What you can get is various rattles and vibrations caused by underbonnet fittings. With the bonnet open try and identify where the noises are copming from. The engine cover is usual source and benefits from three new rubber mounts. All items attached to the bulkhead are very prone to noise as are the air inlet pipes, air cleaner housing etc. Just hold the items to see if it quetens down Use plastic ties to secure or soft copper wire. It is surprising the difference it makes to the enjoyment of driving.
Re, MPG. 45+ is acceptable at 85mph. Chipping will improve. Do make sure air cleaner is new. My air cleaner box gets a load of rubbish in it despite regular changes. You should be getting 48-52 as an average.

There is a slight vibration (like a slight tingle) through the steering wheel at pretty much all revs and it feels rough acceleration through the gears, worse at low revs (<2K) and on hard acceleration but then settles down when crusing at motorway speeds. It feels rough again when slowing down unless I drop a few gears to keep the revs between 2-3K. Can anyone tell me if this is normal, how smooth should it be, would it be worth getting a diagnostic run ? Seemed OK on the test drive but now I have done a few hundred mixed miles not so sure.
Hi, I've got a 2002 130pd sport and its pretty smooth now. Was bad before when I bought it as well. I tried everything to get it right. Replaced the injector loom, ran injector cleaner through, changed a worn set of tyres...but was still bad.
Turned out I had 3 bent wheels one of which was cracked. They were old style RS4 18" replica wheels. Looked great but bent easily. After replacing with a genuine set of Audi 17" s-line wheels (that are straight) its smooth as silk on the road.
There is some minor vibration at idle, but thats just normal pretty much. I have known of one that had vibration issues due to out of balance/shape drive shaft and worn suspension bushes. Set up a bit of a resonance at certain speeds.
ps: I get average 41mpg per tank, commuting 25miles to work and then the same home. Some 30mph for about 5 miles and then 20miles at 75mph. On the motorway if I drive the full tank on it I get max 47mpg, but more like 45mpg. Is worse during winter as well, my work average now with the current weather is 37-38mpg.
