Audi 80 1.9tdi - Missfire/Engine Cut
Hi PPl,
I own a 1994 Audi80 1.9tdi. Recently I have experienced brief engine cut out (less than a second) and juddering. There is no rhyme or reason for this. It does it under heavy acceleration or just crusing on the motorway. It is very intermittent and only does it now and again, but does feel like the engine could cut out completely at any time. Occasionally if I am not careful with the accelerator pedal when stopping the rev's can rise right up to the red line seemingly on their own and am unsure if this is connected to the cut out problem.
Also I have noticed behind the nearside from wheel there is a roll bar which is connected to the spring and shock housing with a foot long plastic arm with ball joints. This has recently become dissconnected. Is this dangerous? What is its purpouse?
I am hoping there is somebody out there who has experienced the same problems as I am in desperate need of some help.
Many thanks.

Thanks, I have found air in the fuel. You can see bubbles about a centimetre apart in the clear pipe going into the fuel filter. I have had the fuel system pressurised from an injector back to the tank. It was set to 110psi and left for half a day. On return the pressure was still 110psi. Does anyone know where the air may be coming into the system?
Re: Audi 80 1.9tdi - Missfire/Engine Cut
Thanks for your help. I managed to find a second hand injector no3 and fitted it last week. The juddering has now inproved but does re-appear regularly but at different times. It only seems to do it now when I put it into fifth gear at low revs and aslo when up to 60-65mph you get a very fine judder or vibration even. It sounds like the engine is missing slightly. Get upto about 75 on the mororway and it cruses like a dream. Do you think the other injectors could be faulty? Could the one I bought be faulty? It does have a 2month warantee. How about timing? Please help if you can this car is giving me a nervous breakdown. Thanks.

My experience with this type of juddering on 94 Audi 80 TDIs
is a faulty electronic actuater unit on top of fuel pump.
A good diesel specialist could confirm if this may be your problem
Other replies stated that their juddering was caused by inner c/v joint
problem another was by a faulty injector so it is process of elimination
Re: Audi 80 1.9tdi - Missfire/Engine Cut
Had the same problem with my Audi 80 and my solution was to have the injector with the attached microchip replaced with a new one rather than used. Wasn't cheap, cost me about £260.00 in all but I've had no problems since and she goes brilliantly now.

Thanks for all your help. I have had fuel injector no3 replaced. Fault has inproved but still there. I have just returned from a long trip. On the way back the car strated juddering worse than ever. Then the coil/choke warning lamp on the dash started blinking. Could this be related to my problem? Does a diesel engine have a coil?

A diesel engine does not have an ignition coil like petrol models
the flashing light is trying to tell you that you have an engine fault. If you look back through threads you may find useful info
I think it was Burnside- Billmad had similar problem

I think the light is the glow plug light - you are supposed to wait for it to go out when cold starting. But if it comes on when you are driving, then this is an engine management problem, as others have suggested. If you get the car's fault codes read, it should point you in the right direction.
Have a look in the Vag com section, maybe see if there is a user local to you?
