Tyre Pressure Monitoring

I have an 08 SE, when I purchased it the dealer told me it has the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, the 2008 brochure states the same.
However looking through the MMI the only mention of tyre pressures is in the setup where you can select the measurement unit ie. bars/psi
According to the manual, when you adjust tyre pressures you have to store them with the MMI, but on my car there is no option to do this.

Does the TPMS require you to have certain tyres ? The dealer fitted four new Nexen tyres.

In your service book on one of the first pages it will list your build spec (or some of the important bits). Have a look if code 7K6 is there as that is the AUDI factory code for TPMS.

It just measures differing rolling radius of wheels using sensors (nothing to do with tyres your replacement tyres).

Has nothing to do with the tyres fitted.

It works similar to the ABS system. A wheel with a deflated tyre has a smaller circumference, and so will have a greater directional velocity, as it's covering a shorter distance in the same time. The computer picks this up, and is therefore able to determine if any of the tyres is underinflated.

If you have it then you will need to reset it for the new tyres. In mine within Car (and possibly setup??) I have a TMPS option. All it does is reset the system. You should use it after you're topped up the air, changed tyres etc.

As said above, the first thing is to check if you have it.

The TPMS option to store the current pressures should be visible in the CAR menu on the MMI. If you don't see it, it may still be possible to enable TPMS on your car using VCDS - I did this for GolferPete. The deciding factor is which ABS module you have fitted to the car - the general pattern seems to be that 1AS is not TPMS-enabled, and 1AT is TPMS enabled. Take a look at the sticker in the spare wheel well (or in your service book) at the option codes and check whether it lists 1AS or 1AT. If it's the latter, a forum member near you with VCDS should be able to get TPMS up and running.

It doesn't look like it's fitted, I don't have the 7K6 code, and the code for the ABS module is 1AS.

Yet according to brochure it's a standard item on the SE model. Nevermind..

Are you sure you're reading the brochure correctly?

A dot means it's an option. If it shows S then it's standard.

In the various brochures I have (including this one : http://dl.dropbox.com/u/3628815/a4%20200807.pdf ) TPMS is not standard on any A4/S4.

With this Tyre Pressure monitor system, I was under the impression it had special valves in the tyres whch is where the sensors where? So when you change your tyres for new ones you have to replace these? Is this correct? As I shall need two front tyres soon so need to be prepared if I need to aquire these sensors from Audi first as I shall get tyres from local tyre Garage?

The only "proper" TPMS ( not via the ABS) I've seen on VWs is on the big 4 x 4's with the tyre pressures displayed on the dash. The special valve sensors are in the wheels not the tyres. The valve sensors look completely different than the normal tyre / wheel valve. Sensors are about £70 each as spare part.

So, tell me is it possible to let the air out carefully so you can re-use the orignal sensors and not let the tyre guy cut them off with a stanley knife like they normally do and save the £70??? for tyre replacement, surely the valve bit are standard which can be unscrewed and replaced if nessessary?
