Re: another turbo question
i would try to find it myself, as it could make an awful mess if it does go into a cylinder.
Re: another turbo question
if you are saying turbine wheel, it will be in the exhaust side, quite harmless.
if you are talking compressor wheel(inlet), it depends on the size i suppose.
if it's a big piece it probably won't get through the intercooler and should be easy to find,
but the broken piece may have been worn down as it contacted the housing and may well have gone through as particles, and out the exhaust by the time you brought it to a standstill, causing little,or no damage.
as above,by zollaf, have a look for it,but personally i wouldn't worry too much if you can't find it,

stewy.

thanks for that, it is the compressor/inlet side
the piece is not that big i would say maybe 2 cm's long and say 1 cm wide, but like you say its probably broke up in the housing, there is tiny pieces of metal in the old compressor housing.
i mainly ask cause i think the bumper and headlight has to come off to get the intercooler out
and does anyone know the best way to prime the turbo?
thanks again for the replies much appreciated as always..
Re: another turbo question
when you fit a turbo be it new, recon or S/h it is always advisable to put some oil in the oil main feed and once fitted and after changing the oil and filter i crank the engine but stop before it starts up, i do that half a dozen times, then i start up and let it ilde for a minute or 2, then when im happy there are no oil leaks and everything seems ok i start it up and let it idle after a couple of minutes i raise the rpm to about 1500, once at running temp i go for a short drive trying not to go over about 2500 rpm, it may be over kill but i once had a brand new turbo starve itself of oil so i always follow the above and havent had a problem
as for the missing bit i would hunt that down as a bit that big could destroy your engine mate
Re: another turbo question
thanks
so i just crank it a few times without it starting to prime it
ive had a little look for that piece but no sign as yet, i will have a proper look tomorrow
thanks to everyone who contributed to this thread if there are any more tips or advice i would love to hear your suggestions
thanks again;)
Re: another turbo question
alright so i just finished fitting the turbo
seems to be working ok except that you dont feel much boost till around 2000rpm and then it pulls hard all the way to the redline
im hoping this is normal as my last turbo was stuck in maximum boost and seemed to pull like a train straight away (just above 1000rpm) till about 3000 then eased off
so if someone could just confirm that this is normal then i think i will be a happy chap
oh yer i didnt find that missing piece think it may have gone through as i spent hours cleaning pipes, i/manifold and the intercooler but didnt find a thing, i even stripped the old turbo down looking for bits..
thanks to everyone who replied
