Hi, I need to get a replacement gearbox for my 1997 TDi Estate. It's the AHU engine with the CTN gearbox. Could any kind person tell me what other boxes will be a straight bolt-on fit please? Any other 02A box?
Thanks!

any other 02A box will go on, however you will be best to get either another CTN gearbox or one with the same ratios.
i'm at work currently and dont have my haynes manual with me but will post again when i'm home and can advise.

Hi Ferrisio,
back home now and looking in Haynes, the following 3 gearboxes are compatible:
ASD
CTN
CYP
all 3 have slightly different ratios, the shortest being the CTN, then the CYP and the longest legged one is the ASD. the difference being about 15mph @ 3000rpm in 5th gear (CTN = about 75mph @ 3000rpm in 5th, ASD = about 90mph @3000rpm in 5th)
the ASD would be noticeably slower accelerating but have better cruising characteristics, while the CTN would be faster through the gears but be noisyier and drink more fuel on the motorway.
the CYP is close to the CTN in terms of gear ratios but is slightly longer legged (77 mph @ 3000rpm in 5th).
any of these should be easy to fit straight in, as per my other recent post its worth changing the clutch at the same time since you will have the gearbox off anyway.

That would be great, thanks! I've actually just bought a Haynes but just noticed it goes up to 96 and there is a later version that goes up to 98... My car is a 97 - whoops!
We both posted at the same time! Really appreciate you looking that up - looks like an ASD is the one for me, I'm not bothered about performance, an unladen Golf Mk3 is pretty lively but a little bit of extra economy in 5th is no bad thing!
Thanks again, and point taken about the clutch, with the usual groan when considering added expense this time of year!
Hello DropKickMurphy,
Sorry to interfere to your discusion, but this topic is really matters to me. You seem knowlegeable enough about gearboxex and ratios unlike me.
It would be great if you advise me what gearbox should fit my engine.
My mk3 is equiped with a 1Z turbo engine 1995 and a CHC gearbox which was taken from a nonturbo engine. the problem is that it seems there is a MISUNDERSTANDING between the engine and the gearbox in terms of RPM and SPEED. my rpm at 60mph is 3000 which sounds too much. Normally 2.5krpm is enough for 60mph if I am right. A guy told me that I should look for a CTN gearbox but this later is hydraulic and the CHC is cable-linked. Is there an alternative for this CTN or any gearbox that would make my poor engine at ease and fits to it appropriately.
I posted some pictures for the enging and the gearbox in case I didn't explain well.
I wish you have some time to help bro
Thanks in advance
