New clutch judders - faulty clutch fitting or fly wheel?
I have a 1.8 SE 1998 Passat B5. I've had it from new, always delaer serviced, no expense spared. Currently 120k miles onn the clock.
When I took it for the last service, I reported a high biting point on thge clutch, and asked the delaer to check it. I may be wromg, but i expected a simple ajustment might be all that was required, since the clutch itslef seemed fine. Theyb reported it the clutch needed replacing, so I said fine, go ahead. Ever since then the clutch has benn juddering - the old one didn't judder. When I reported this, they said it was most likely the fly wheel, which is another £1,000 fitted. I asked around for advice and the concensus was that if there wasn't a judder before, then was more likely to be a faulty new clutch, or dodgy fitting.
Is it likely to be a clutch fault, in which case the work can be done under warranty.
I am loathed to take just the delaers word for it - their attitude is one of "we could try a new __part__ and see if that fixes it", rather than actually invetsigating the problem and fixing it.

Did you sort this bud? If it was the flywheel it will have detroyed the new clutch by now i guess....

Someone suggested I try letting it settle in. After about 4 weeks (1,000 miles) it more or less stopped juddering. You've got me thinking though that perhaps it is the case that the cutch has been runied.
In truth, right from the start, my car (which I have had from new) has never had the smoothest of clutches, compared to a Toyota or Honda. Don't know if that's a VW thing or just my car.

It is possible its been damaged - theres no reason why clutches should need bedding in these days. The passat does have a dual mass flywheel, which the toyota and honda may not have done as theyve only fairly recently started fitting them, but that doesnt affect the smoothness unless it is knackered.
Many garages arent up to speed with these flywheels - its where most of my marketing/sales efforts are targeted, in educating the independants..... who are normally ahead of the dealers in any case!!
If the flywheel is knackered you'll normally get some noise, especially on start up and shut down. You may also get a vibration at the pedal which smooths as you depress it slightly??
