Strange Noise....
Hi,
I have a 57 plate Estate, here's what's happening:
Start the car, put into reverse, after a yard or so I get a loudish, high pitch whining noise (difficult to describe really!). I'll reverse for about 10 yards and then go forward - after about 20 yards going forward the noise stops.
It doens't do it if you restart the car a couple of hours afterwards, only when in effect starting from cold.
I had the rear brake pads replaced at dealers about 500 miles ago, could this be anything to do with it or just coincidence?
Thanks, Phil.

Re: Strange Noise....
Where is the whining coming from. Front, back. Wheels, engine ?

Re: Strange Noise....
Hi,
The noise is coming from the rear wheels. Yesterday it didn't make the noise at all, today it started, as soon as applied brake it stopped.
I can only describe the noise as something like it needs an application of WD40 to stop it!
It's about 500/600 mile since the rear brake pads were done, even if they're wearing in I wouldn't expect such a noise...
Thanks.

Re: Strange Noise....
It could be grit, a stone or a twig caught in the caliper/disc area. Might be worth asking the dealer to have a quick look if it's not your sort of thing.

Re: Strange Noise....
What are the discs like for wear, do you have much of a lip on the edges?
It could be that the pad in reverse is moving and resonating on the outer lip, possible cure might be to find a car park and do a few backward runs as quick as you feel safe to do so and hard brake, this should wear the pad enough to stop if happening in future, were the pads done at an indy or VW?
