Re: Auto not changing up??
That is 20mph per 1000 rpm which suggests the box is stuck in third, I can’t look up the ratio info as my PC is updating the info but I would have expected it to be around 25 per 1000 in 4th, 20 per 1000 is just as a Golf 1 or 2 GTI would have been and seems wrong. When I can check my info, I will but it would help me if you could give me the cars type number (starts 8L? ???) engine code (such as AUM) and transmission code, all of these can be found on the vehicle data sticker in the boot or the front cover of the service book.
Re: Auto not changing up??
Thanks for the quick response, the car is an 8L1 CD8, engine code AGN gearbox ELS. Funny you should mention a mk2 Golf Gti as I have recently sold mine and thats just what its like at motorway speeds. (but a lot quieter)
If it is stuck in third is it a quick fix? I am presuming its a softwear fault?
Cheers
Re: Auto not changing up??
My wifes A3 ('01 1.8 Auto, 73k miles) is the same. I took it to Audi but they did not find anything wrong with it?? Please let me know if you determine the fault!

I am having the same issue on mine. Its a Golf Mk 4 Auto 5 speed GTI 1.8 Petrol MY2003. VIN: 1JZ4U001611. Engine Code is AUM099828. Car will not change between gear 2-3. Mechanic says i need a new gearbox but they are quite expensive and one has no way of knowing whether the used g/box will be good or not.
Is there any way of identifying a good auto box. what can one check for?
Can any experts share their experiences?
Thanks in advance fellas
Re: Auto not changing up??
First of all that is 2004 model year car and an odd one to have in the UK as it is a Uitenhage built 1.8T GTI auto and is not listed on the UK data base so it appears to not be registered in the UK, it should be in South Africa! It looks to me that it is as type 1J1 6N8 and it would have an FYL or GPD box.
Re: Auto not changing up??
Hi Crasher,
Thanks for your comments. Is it possible to source this in the UK from breakers. How can someone identify whether the gearbox being sold will match his car? Is there any way of identifying a good auto box. what can one check for? I have spent so much repairing & modifying it I dont want to scrap it as its been a loyal car.
Appreciate any advice and if you ever come down to Cape Town I will buy you plenty of beers to show my gratitude.
Re: Auto not changing up??
So you are in South Africa, in that case why is your location shown as being the United Kingdom?
You need to establish which box your car has and if it is original you can depend on the data sticker which is on the boot floor and on the inside front cover of your service book, as far as I can establish the code will be FYL or GPD but in theory these are interchangeable so you should be able to use one or the other but I am not 100% sure on this as the part number for a brand new box is the same for both but for an exchange box it is different.
Re: Auto not changing up??
Sticker says GPD, how did you know mate?
Thanks
