Hello all from a VW newbie!

I have recently bought a 56 plate (07) Golf GT TDI with 84k on the clock. It is an ex-company car with full VW service history.

I have had to already change the 'Flap' (mechanic said something about exhaust gases), which cost me £350.00.

There are three things that are worrying me about this car and I need your help as I have a newborn baby and I am worried the car is going to breakdown!

1) Occasionally, when I accelerate reasonably gently, the car 'hiccups' once, causing the car to sort of 'kangaroo' if that makes sense (?!).

2) When coming to a stop, the sometimes car feels like it is moving back and forward a couple of inches, as if the engine is not properly secured or like the ABS is trying to work and the brakes are biting and releasing - again, if that makes sense?!

3) Where I work, our driveway goes down a slope, so I often pull away, then put the car into neutral, take my foot off the clutch, then coast down the slope. As soon as I lift off the clutch, the engine makes a really noticeable rattling sound, the engine feels like it is going to stall and the engine revs up and down by about 100 or 200 revs. It stops as soon as I dip the clutch again.

PLEEEEEEASE can anyone tell me if they have experienced the above or know what all/any of the above could be because I need to know whether they are a major problem or not?

Thank you very much and I look forward to hearing from you.

All the best,
Tony.

hello mate and welcome great car you have there, lets see about the couple of problems to make it even better,

the hicup you have is it when you turn left or right? (mine does this aswell) now at work ive had 3 mk5 golfs do this one was a 105 and the other two were 140, the fault with them was the inside of the ecu was wet, due to there location in the middle of the scuttle panel they are prone to getting wet, we had a local company repair the ecu which cured the fault (it may not be this on yours it just has similar semtions), now the rattle noise could be one of 2 problems one is cheap and easy to fix and the other not so cheap, it could be your DMF (dual mass flywheel) is rattling or it could be the clutch in your alturnator has siezed up, to test the alt take the belt off and spin the pulley then grab hold of the pulley, in inside part of the alt should continue to turn even tho you have hold of the pulley if it doesnt then you will need to have the pulley replaced bud, hope this makes some sence mate

Hi Phil and thank you for such a quick reply!

It is a great car and I don't want to get rid of it. If I do, it'll be to buy another one!!

To be honest, I don't know whether the hiccupping happens when I'm turning left or right... I THINK, it happens when I am going straight on but I will keep an eye on it and see what direction I'm in when it next happens.

I hope it is not the DMF as I've heard they are very expensive. Do you (or anyone on this forum) know how much they are?

Could it be the DMF on a 2007 car with 84k miles on the clock?

As for the testing, I have no experience of cars so I think I'll take it in to a garage and ask them to do that test... knowing me, I'll do something wrong and blow the engine up!

Thank you mate - it's much appreciated and I'll update this thread once I've got an update.

All the best,
Tony.
