I have a Golf mk IV with remote central locking. Last Saturday thieves stole the radio from the car. There was no sign of forced entry, no broken windows. I only realised that the car had been broken into when i got in and saw the glove box open and the contents strewn across the passenger seat. It was a cheap radio and I put it down to not locking the car when i left it in the street - careless me!

Last night exactly the same thing happened. My wife go to the car and found the glove box open with no signs of forced entry. The difference is that I know I locked the car last night.

The police have not been very helpful, but I'm now worried that thieves can get into the car whenever they want.

Has anyone else had this problem and is there anything that I can do to thwart the thieves? Is there a known issue with the alarm and locking system on the MK4 Golf which a VW dealer can fix? Is there anything I can do to secure the car? Any suggestions gratefully received...

This is a known issue with virtually all VW's produced from 99-05.

I dont want to spell it out, but it has to do with the 'full closure' mechanism, which allows you to open or close all your windows with the key 'etc' in the lock.

This also disables the factory alarm.

I think there may be a official VW fix for this problem, for a long time they wanted to ignore the problem.

In the short term you could disable window operation on the key with vagcom, if you have it.

On the downside, if they cant get in they may smash a window.
