Rahter than use the kit... go to a garage and get the system tested.

You may have a leak,

Without knowing why the "self serve system" went to red its a tough one.

Was there any pressure in the system?

Thanks for your help when i removed the gauge it appeared to have plenty of pressure in the system.

to things and im not teaching you to suck eggs, what age is your car? do you have an AIRCON button or an ECON button? if you have ECON make sure the orange light is out (it means the aircon is switched on) if it still isnt working have the car plugged in as you could have the same problem as me and that is your air con high pressure switch is ******, hope this helps bud

Just been told the air con compressor is at fault meanibg a £1040 bill from vw. Priced the parts myself and found a compressor for £500 so i'm thinking of changing it myself but before i do has anyone got any advice for me?

its not a hard job to do, see if you can get an aircon specialist to empty the system, then change the comp, and get it refulled

Would you recommend taking the compressor upwards removing the alternator or downwards, this is on 2.0tdi engine ?

I read on another forum/ website that it is better not to replace the compressor like for like but go for a Sanden unit. The costs quoted in the link below are in Aus Dollars but I'm sure the UK price I saw was about £500 fitted by an independant a/c specialist.

Ok before I spend my money on a new compressor I’ve found that there is only 3.9volts at the compressor whether the econ switch is on or off, and the compressor is not engaged. Does anyone know the correct voltage for the aircon clutch and would the high pressure sensor have any link to this fault.
