As a fair Comparison and using 100 miles as a benchmark what is your best mpg? A sline 170bhp I returned 62.7 mpg on A and motorway sticking to speed limit. Anyone top that, figure I could have nudged a tad higher if roadworks did not interrupt

As I put in another post ("The tank had done two return trips from Bristol to Swansea already, then this weekend we went from Bristol to south of Croydon, to Canterbury, and back to Bristol. 720 miles on one tank, with the DIS showing 56.4mpg overall!"), I have had a pretty good tankful this weekend. I have on occasions seen 62.7mpg on DIS1 (don't know over what distance) but I don't think I have ever seen more than that. You have set a pretty tough challenge.

How accurate are those reading? I calibrated my reading by calculating the distance traveled divided by how many gallons I pump to full tank.

In my car I found that it's showing 5% more mpg, so I adjusted the DIS using VAG.

For my daily driving, I get around 31.5 mpg but haven't tried a long drive.

Yes, I would agree that it's about 5% optimistic on average (and I don't have VAG-COM / VCDS to fix that). I filled up this morning and it was 4.3% optimistic, giving a true 54.1mpg :o

That sounds as if the trip was reset after the engine warmed. Mine is awful until it has warmed up 18-24 mpg, but when I get to roadworks of 50 - 60 mph it shoots up. NOBODY gets 63 mpg from standing start and a cold engine let alone with a 170 bhp engine, unless you were pushing !!!!!:D

Taking it really really easy I can manage low 50's.

On long runs upper 40's is no prob with some tanking it.

Everyday not really taking much notice av'ing low to mid 40's (true).

All in all I think that's pretty good for an auto.

Over 100 miles motorway driving (70ish) get 47-48 mpg.

Normal commute of 25 miles, and driving carefully gets 42-44!

Not bad I know, just devastating when you floor it for a bit and you're looking at mid 30's!

I travelled to Manchester last weekend which was about 75 miles and covered a mixture of A roads and motorway. I took it easy and put the cruise control on to 60 mph on the motorway. I got up to 50.2 mpg according to DIS which I was really pleased with.

Took off from Wiltshire with cold engine. Drove non stop to gatwick and the DIS ended at 62.7. Took a photo which confirms mileage and mpg over the distance will post on return from hols. I know the DIS is likely optimistic. Car by the way is new spanker. Not sure whether that helps mpg.

Wow are you sure it wasn't all down hill with a prevailing wind ;) I must remember to remove that lead from my right shoe.!!!!! I found that mpg improved as the engine lossened so who knows what you will get....keep us posted.

Carrying quite a bit, not hanging around and a relatively good boot from the tolls...40.3mpg. Maybe not a good benchmark, but I thought pretty good for petrol

That's interesting my DIS is 4-5% inaccurate too, I hadn't realised it could be calibrated - maybe I'll ask my dealer to do that.

I find though that the degree of inaccuracy varies, mainly because of the steps that the DIS uses for average MPG, eg it will go from 48.7 to 49.5 in one step, so the logic in the programming must have a point at which it goes up to the higher number or vice versa the only truly accurate measurement will be calculating consumption from fill to fill.

I find that annoying too. I assume it "thinks" like a European, and does it's calculations in l/100km to 1 decimal place, then converts to mpg.

Which opens up a whole other discussion about our partial metrication in the UK, which means that we buy fuel in litres and measure distance in miles - perhaps we should just finish the job?

I'm in my mid-40s - I'd rather just buy my diesel in gallons ;-)
I think my recent record of 54.1mpg equates to 5.2l/100km. Does that mean anything to anyone?

In most of the rest of the World it would be perfectly understandable (and yes your conversion is correct:D) The only exception being the US, but their Gallon is not the same as ours anyway!

The discrepancy is because the car is calibrated on a treadmill/rolling road (or what ever you call it) rather than on an actual road

Back from hols so thought would give an update on MPG. Have attached 2 images from 105 miles and 74 miles travelled respectively on different dates. The images are from the dash readout both starting from cold . The lower mpg may have increased if I had travellled further. Have not yet filled the tank and will do so this weekend and check the next run(s) to see what the differences are in DIS reading and actual MPG, bearing in mind it is a new car.

Kept to speed limit (as always) on both runs.

Also a couple of pics of the new wheels. 170bhp good power with economy, better economy than previous 143bhp!

Drove back home from a weekend away in Cumbra, from a cold start to home, 200 miles I got 45.2, and that was comfirmed when I re-filled my tank, not bad for the 3.0 L TDI?

My overall average from Day 1 which is still on Computer 2 memory from new is avaraging 41.5 :-)

Car has now nearly coverred 10k miles and just had its first service.

60.1 MPG door-to-door from East Lancashire to south of Birmingham with a 2.0 Tdi 170, I had to work pretty hard for it though!

Just been reading this thread with interest. Normally on a trip through to work which is around 12 miles I get 43mpg. On a trip which involves quite a few hills I average 31mpg, to be fair its only the mpg which has been a let down with the car so far. I often find it frustraiting having to always drive steady just to get a decent MPG, hence why I'm considering a remap. by the way mine is a 143 2008 onwards.

Is this normal mpg do you think?

I get around 30mpg with my 2.0 TFSI Quattro, and i think thats brilliant!!!!!

But i did come from an STi PPP impreza which managed 22mpg on a good day, with a tailwind, downhill, and coasting in neutral for most of it...........:aargh4:

This is part of the problem. In my last car it had the basic computer which only told me how many miles I had left in the tank, so I used to drive it as I liked. But with this car which tells you everything, including how many gallons/hour you are expelling whilst using the A/C, so I tend to find myself driving like miss daisy most of the time.

Not 100 miles, but still not bad - 64.2mpg (Swansea to Bristol).
It was showing 65.6mpg until the big hill after the Severn Bridge and before the M4/M5 interchange.
That's 620 miles out of the tank so far, and still a Range of 120. (DIS2 = 56.4). From March / 10000 miles, the economy seems to have improved a lot; probably helped by higher ambient temperatures.
Life was less stressful between 2004 and 2008, when I had an Accord 2.2D which didn't have a trip computer!

64.2 beats me but I just know there is more to come from my 170 TDI! I do not have any decent runs for awhile but still getting around 58 mpg on 25 mile runs no drama. This is significantly better than my previous B8 143 and seems to reflect the amount of fuel actually used. Before I was getting around 350 to the half way mark at the moment showing 425 and still not half way point on the guage.

Juniperz is the official holder of the B8 screen shot 64.2!http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/images/icons/icon14.gif
