View Full Version : All Quiet on the Heathrow Front
Well I have just returned to work after 4 days off so this is my first day dealing with the on-going air-space problems.
Its bloody quiet here you could hear a pin drop.
Lots of work going on during the lull in air traffic !!!
It is so odd isn't it! My office is at wheels down on the approach for Heathrow and it has been nice and peaceful :)
When we open for business you might find it gets a more noisy than normal....

Blown my plans for a few days in India. Oh well, never mind.
Maybe it's time we invade Iceland, after all, first they take a shed load of UK moneny when their banks failed, then they refuse to pay it back, now they're interfereing with our air travel. :-)

So obviously Heathrow and Gatwick are having all their maintenance work done in the mean-time?

I know that my company (fairly large international airline) has pulled as much MAINTENANCE as is possible to justify!!, meaning that when the cloud of doom lifts we are as prepared as possible for the "fall-out" (no pun intended:Blush:), but what is disturbing is not just the immeadiate effect on customers (which is devastating!!) it is also the long term effect on the companies, WHO PAYS!?! After all it COULD be classed as a natural disaster?
Why did the "British Airways Cabin Crew" not strike this weekend (THAT WOULD HAVE GONE DOWN IN HISTORY AS THE MOST POINTLESS STRIKE IN HISTORY;)).
Unfortuneately the affect on people who work in this industry will also be devastating unless there is a help packet from the government.

There is a lot of routine maint. stuff being done while we are quiet.
I would think it will be chaos when the airspace opens again.

It'd better open again soon, 7 days until my holiday starts. I'm getting a bit worried now!
Having not seen any publication of actual data/information on the ash accumulation it does appear like a slight over-reaction. H&S gone mad. I'd quite happily fly today with no worries at all.
I'll make sure you get away Issac !!!!

It has been dead for us too... BAA is our biggest contract esp at night.
Even today it's very quiet... I think it will take some time for things to pick back up again.
Thing should return to normal within a couple of days

Problem is, Isaac
They're damned if they do and damned if they don't.
As always the press(especially that cheerful Daily Mail) is looking for a scapegoat, it's so glib to carp on about how unnecessary they thought the grounding of all aircraft was after the event but the fact is there is little data about things like this but had a passenger jet crashed because they failed to ground the aircraft there would be hell to pay.
I think they were right to ground the aircraft until they were satisfied everything had returned to a safe condition.
Ok, the passengers were severely delayed and some will never be reimbursed due to the sharp practices of insurance companies but they are still alive!

It started to pick up again for us last night... I think all will be normal by Monday.
