Sitting in traffic yesterday after the engine had been running for around 20mins, the temperature sign on the dashboard LCD display began to flash up and beep constantly at this point the temperature dial moved up from 90 to just under 120 in a matter of seconds.
When I pulled over the engine did not seem to be too hot and there was plenty of coolant. I did not experience any loss of power.
Now everytime the engine has been running for around 10 mins the temp dial goes up to 110 and sits there until turned off. The heating inside the car now does not work after this also.
Any suggestions as to what could be the problem please???

Im guessing(keep in mind just guessing!!)that this may be more than just an issue with the temp gauge.
this is because when i had a problem with the one in my old car, a golf gti it would never rise above around 25%, having the same issue with my a3 1.8t at the moment. when it was doing it on the golf got it changed at my uncles garage, crapping it thinkin its gonna be a huge job he told me its nothing really and a common problem but said its onlywhen it goes higher than 90 that i should be worried.
not trying to scare you but id get it checked out asap.

Waterpump seems most likely.
Fairly common failure on A3, and cars in general. Not too expensive to fix if it is the case.

It did end ujp being the waterpump that had failed - pump and timing belt both had to be replaced.
Thanks

Got me thinking now, when i got water pump and cam belt changed the water pump had melted away. at the same time i got the temp sensor done but thinking now maybe it was the water pump that was the problem

I am replacing my waterpump, Timing belt, Thermo stat, plugs, fuel filter, flushing engine and replacing oil. How much should this cost me roughly... Parts, Labour and location of London. Not by Audi tho.
Cheers Kyle.
