Hi,
For info:
I purchased a 2.5 inch portable hard drive on a whim thinking it would fit in the armrest slot as I don't have any devices that start with a small 'i'. It was an Iomega 250gb but was too wide so had to remove the rubber insert. It was still too tight but went in corner to corner, I put up with it until I could find another.
After more research, this time I took another gamble once again and bought a Freecom Classic 2 320gb from Ebuyer for £46.55 delivered. The beauty is that it comes formatted FAT32 as well so it's plug and play and I can confirm that it fits like a glove!.
So if you are in the market for a music storage device for your car then I can fully recommend the Freecom.

:bigok:Why do you prefer this over an ipod. Do you still get the name of the albums and tracks when you use this method, and do you download from pc.

I'd've said that this makes sense as long as you don't want to use it for playing music outside of the car.
It'd give extra versatility if you want to have a sinple multi purpose device, that's inexpensive. If I was going to do this it'd be handy as it'd be quick to move music.
however, I have an ipod and I like using that in the car as it's easy to navigate and works with some automation through iTunes.
I also just bought a 500gb mini disc like yours for 70 quid :)

I have a homemade 2.5" disk in my armrest slot (seagate hd + sumvision enclosure) and there is space to fit the mdi cables in next to it.
I like it cos I can put my entire music collection on it, updating it every now and then, and I have everything I could possibly want to listen to in the car. :biglaugh:

Well I don't see the point in buying a specific hard drive just to play your music. I use a 2GB flash drive and I have 261 mp3's in 16 folders. The folders are listed as artist. I have a Audio.wpl file which lists all tracks with all the info. Now I don't thing you actually need the wpl file as each mp3 will have its own info built in.
Now this 2GB is 3/4 full but you can get 16GB, 32GB or 64GB drives at a reasonable cost. Plus think of the size saving squeezing an hard drive in the armrest?
You say you need to convert these files to mp3? What file format are they at the moment?
If you have Nero installed then that should have Nero WaveEditor. Don't get confused by the name it doesn't just edit wav files it will import any sound file format and convert it to any other format, in your case mp3. ;)

A 64GB flash drive costs ~£110.
A 320GB HDD costs £55.
Think it is quite easy to see why you'd choose the latter!

I got one of these exact Hard Drives this weekend. It's prefect. Spins up really quickly when you start the engine and fits easily into the arm rest. I'm using a HDD because I have more than 32GB of music and I don't like Ipods. I have a Creative Zen but that's now full.

I dragged and dropped all my songs from the itunes folder on my laptop onto the h/d. Everything works perfectly, in fact, the car will even play the audio tracks from the movies I have on the h/d as well!

It depends where you look. This (http://shop.ebay.co.uk/?_from=R40&_trksid=p2897.m38.l1313&_nkw=64gb+USB+Flash+Drives&_sacat=See-All-Categories) is just a quick search on eBay. ;)
