I picked up my new golf 3 months ago but discovered a large amount of water in the passenger footwell front and rear. I thought initially I had washed the car without the door shut properly and it was all my fault. However, now I realise that it has a serious leak when driving in the wet - so it is booked in with the dealer. Has anyone else had this problem? Carpet now stinks!

Do you have a sunroof? Common faults (on all VW models) is the drainage tube, coming down the door pillar, becoming dislodged causing the water to leak into the footwells.

If you don't have a sunroof, it could be the door seals.

Or it could be that the drainage channels in front of the windscreen are blocked. This is a common cause of having a swimming pool as an unwanted extra.

I'm sure a lot of MK6 owners will be very interested in the root cause and fix for this water leak. Are you sure it is water and not screenwash fluid ?

Well I wouldn't care if its water or screenwash it still a leak, I've heard of these water leaks before (Google it) it appears to be a common fault, take it back under warranty. ;)

I was asking the question about washer fluid to understand the cause of the leak. Of course the car should be returned to dealer , but it helps if the owner knows what the likely cause of the problem is so that the dealer actions may be monitored.

Most of the reported leaks on Google do seem to be on 2 door cars (larger doors ?) and appear to be door alignment issues. After dealer fixes leak make sure that carpets are lifted to allow padding under carpets to thoroughly dry out or smell may linger on, or cause unseen corrosion. This may take a few days under cover with doors open.

It could be condensate from the A/C. I had that problem with a new Mk5 and the dealer un-kinked the waste pipe from the tundish under the cooling matrix and then renewed all the carpets because of the chance that bacteria might cause a smell at some later point in the car's life.

no sunroof. The water appeared again after a journey in the rain. It's with the dealer this week for investigation.

Yep, I have the same problem.

with the dealer for the third tiem as we speak, tried to give it back today saying that after testing they couldn't find any water in the car. I pushed the seat back lifted the carpet flap over the plug for the seat airbag and found water.

They've already replaced the seal, realigned the door (now has differing panal gaps to the drivers side) and now they're stripping out the passenger seat lifting the carpet and trying again.

they've never made any effort to dry the car out when they've had it before which is dissapointing, I might push for a new carpet and underlay.

tomorrow is the tenth day they've had it in total.

Dealer found a "tucked grommet" behind the door hinges. They have refitted it and completely replaced underlay and carpet and retested for water leaks. Fingers crossed.

no photos i'm afraid. I understand the grommet was not fitted in the factory properly so the water could flow freely through the hole it is supposed to plug.:(

My tip... get the car home... and get the hose pipe on to for 10 mins and make sure!

wouldn't the water just drain out from the holes in the bottom of the door?

I am amazed that VW has been allowed to get away with this problem for so long. The rear foot-well of my wife's Bora regularly gets sopping wet during the winter. My daughter's Golf 6 has had endless leaking problems (she has now traded it for a different model). My son's Golf 5 has been in and out of the dealer's countless times. It has had door seals replaced, hatch seal replaced, windows investigated, panels removed etc; etc; and it still leaks like a sieve. So we have mark4 (Bora), mark5 and mark6 all with leaking problems. It's a disgrace. Personally, I have had five Saabs and two Mercedes over the last 25 years and not a single leak with any of them.

It's a Golf thing, MK1s plagued by bulkhead drains blocked by leaf debris allowing water to back up and enter via cold air intake, or water following arial lead in and dripping on fuse box. Mk2 rubber windscreen seals that didn't (seal) and rear door membranes that let in gallons of water. No idea about later Mks but Mrs MK6 is OK, fingers crossed.

Good job VW don't build boats...

I've got mine back and they seem to have eventually fixed it. A seal around the speaker was cracked allowing water in. They fitted a new speaker, window regulator and sealed everything up and all now seems well.
