View Full Version : Looking into a new Golf

Only been passed about 9 months or so and am already bored of driving my 1.4 Corsa D, although already got to attend a speed awarness course :zx11: (36 in a 30 !!!!)
Looking into getting a new Golf.
Been looking around and want the 1.4 TSI 122PS automatic one, I could probably get one from a show room no problem (I think ?). However I wanted quite a few bits and bobs added to it, including tinted windows, touch screen sat nav, parking sensors, folding mirrors, arm rests etc....and with the colour I want I doubt very much I would find one and would probably have to have it made.....
Anyway my question is how long would I generally be waiting for this ?
Also why do they only do it in 5 door aswell why no 3 ?
Thanks in advance

Phone a dealer to get a rough estimate but I reckon on 6-7 months. Any advances on that?

6-7 months...suppose i will have to learn to wait, im not really one to wait a long time..........
I was actually in Wolfsburg last week which is where they are made, should have stopped by and placed my order then.....Bloody big place aswell.......got trams that rung along all the employee car parks to pick them up about 1-2 miles stretch of employee car parks.

You've picked the worst engine for lead time, although it is now down to 5-6months.
You need to call a few dealers, as some will have better allocation than others, and one may have a unsold car in the system that they can amend the spec to your preferences.
If you are selling your Corsa privately then consider going via a broker like www.carfile.net, who will get you 9-10% discount, and you still deal directly with their appointed VW dealer.

more than likely going to finance with VW....did want a scirocco but im only 20 and only new to driving........Was looking at putting the corsa down as a deposit....08 plate and only done 12,000 so should be enough......and then finance for 3 years and at the end of that hopefully be able to get my scirocco.....seems like the best idea.

If you're only 20, why on earth do you want to saddle yourself with £16000 worth of finance ffs?

At 20 I would think he would pay cash for the car and have the insurance on tick. :biglaugh: ;)
Personally, I would contact each of your local dealers to find out what they have as their unregistered stock. With the scrappage deal ended dealers have found themselves with alot of unregistered stock. I received a letter last week from one of my local dealers offering on all their brand new (unregistered, pre-registered) and used cars.
- 3 years FREE Road Fund Licence.
- 3 years FREE servicing.
- 3 years FREE warranty.
- 12 months FREE roadside assistance.
You will find dealers will be ready to offer you a better discount if you purchase from their existing stock now rather than factory ordering, I'm sure you can find the model and spec you want.
I would also be careful with finance deals which were competitive when base rates were at 3%, some of the deals VW Finance were offering at that time began from 4%. Now that base rate is at 0.5%, the lowest interest rate VW are offering on Golfs is 7.9% with 30% deposit. On pre-registred or used you will be looking at least 10%. I'm afraid to say the bank rates are not competitive either.

Probably because I earn a reasonable wage allowing me to do so.
Budgeting comes into it aswell.

Well I think the lad can do what he wants :)
Regarding the offers zf44 did they actually send any prices along too: e.g for a 1.4 TSI S 5 door vs 1.4 TSI SE 5 door etc.

No prices but here is the dealer's website,
www.johnsonsvolkswagen.co.uk (http://www.johnsonsvolkswagen.co.uk)
They have dealerships in Birmingham, Solihull, Sutton Coldfield and Tamworth.
They are also offering 6 months FREE fuel on all BLUEMOTION models.:D

Firstly, your comment about only being avaiable in 5 door- do you mean 1.4 auto?? Also, while of course its not for me to pass judgement on anyone's choice of car, what is steering you towards this car/ model at the joyful age of 20?

I can't comment on his personal situation, but at 20 I was at University. Even my mates who were working were all flying about in old bangers, can't imagine why you'd want to finance a car at that age. Buy something with cash and spend the money on saving or going out!

Yeah I was at uni too, I drove a dark red Clio, which leaked horrendously, as did my next car come to think of it (no more renaults for me!!). Only 7 years ago for me but jeez seems like a lifetime. But if I could afford it I have to say I would buy something 2nd hand and I bit flashier than a 1.4 Golf. thank god for choices eh...

Yer meant the 1.4 auto.....been looking at it on VW website customizing it etc and says can only get the model i want in 3 door?
Dont really know why i want a golf.....probably the quickest car i can get for my age without insurance hitting top wack...like the looks of them and they are affordable, could spend my money on a 2nd hand better car but tbh i dont really want a second hand car.
If you think i would be saddled with money issues financing a 20k car over 3 years with a 6k deposit (doesn't sound too bad does it now ) you need to know people I know.....got a friend who is probably on roughly same as me who pays 600 in rent a month....JUST rent, no electiricty or food etc....
You only live once I could drop dead in 2 years and have not alot to show for my life......
£250-300 a month in car rent will leave me with plenty of money left to p~~s up the wall ;)
Also how does one spend their money on saving ? :D

You can actually earn a good wage without going to uni- I did a 4 year apprenticeship with a major construction contractor after leaving school- at 21 I got a brand new company A4, at 23 I bought a flat, and I don't have the debt that many graduates from uni end up with.
It annoys me the way this country puts the emphasis on going to university and that anyone who doesn't is destined for some kind of minimum wage life forever, but that's a different topic of debate.
Monkeylad- you'll enjoy the Golf, Mrs has the MK5 GT which was an ex-demo and has been spot on so far if only she would let me drive it more often. :beerchug:

Don't forget to try out an Audi A3 -
Three year warranty, 12 months roadside assistance + 12 months tax is standard,
Whatever deal you get, it has to be worth at least 10% of the list price of the car, or you are better off getting it from a broker.

Is the £250 service offer able to be used at any vw authorised dealer? i.e. does it tie me into the supplying dealer?

Work for a fire alarm company doing technical drawings.. which with various bonus add ons isn't bad going.
Went VW yesterday and with bits I wanted came to 22k but I added a 2k touch screen nav which to be honest isn't really needed, so will get rid of that. I wanted the black alloys they had but he didnt seem interested in giving them to me, which if i want I will get.
Taking a test drive next week and then we will get down to business with the help of my dad who is a shrude negotiator
From 22k on a balloon finance how low do you think I should be looking to get it ?

As an ex tax dodger I have to say I totally agree with you. Unless its a real specialist degree aimed at a specialsed area I wouldnt recommend university for career benefits (obviously social fun was super:biglaugh:) but if I knew then what I do now I think I would avoid uni and go and get a trade under my belt. Everyone and there dog has a degree now and realistically you can't beat real life working experience.

Look I do agree with you, like everything in life there are flip sides to everything but as you say make the most of it, its an er of using finance and credit to pay for everything so why not, I spend nearly £1200 quid on mortgages and my car payment. Enjoy whatever you buy, like I said thank god for choices. I have never kept a car for more than a year up until now so thats the only reason I hinted at 2nd hand, plus the bargains to be had. Good luck whatever you decide to buy, only you know truly what you want.

Depends on which finance company they go with, my friend is business manager at VW so she told me they can use a couple of different companies. Also didnt you mention a 6k deposit?? That will help with the rate hopefully so if you have to finance approx £14k it should be well under £300 a month if you went 3 yr PCP.

Yer 6k deposit....5k for my car i drive at the moment and then 1k in my own money which will be the deposit for the car.....
Looking at insurance it looks as if I will be paying £1,200 which I dont think is too bad, got my mum as additional drive which brings it down a £200....when i get it though, might have a ring around and see if there are any advancements on that sum.

As a good starting point to haggle use the site below to see what sort of discounts you should be receiving off the list price (and accessories) and a rough idea on your monthly payments.

A quick calculation for you, using a good old fashioned "Cash Purchase" and a personal loan...
VOLKSWAGEN GOLF HATCHBACK 1.4 TSI SE 5dr DSG
DVD Navigation w/6.5 inch colour touch screen radio/CD/MP3 aux input MDI 30GB HD SD slot dynaudio soundpack + 8 speakers + highline
Luxury pack - Golf
Heat insulated tinted glass from B pillar back
Leather steering wheel/gearknob/handbrake grip
Ultrasonic front and rear optical and audible parking sensors
Colour: Solid - Tornado red, £0
Trim: Merlin cloth - Titan black, £0
Cost of Car RRP: £22240 inc VAT + Del etc.
Total Discounted Cash Price Using Broker: £19,782.16
Less Private Sale of Corsa D (Valued at £6k private sale)
Less £1000 Cash in Hand
Total amount Left to finance: £12782.16
Personal Loan for Three Years @ 8.9%APR = £ 404.40 per month.
= You have paid for and own the car after three years.
Assuming the car will be in good condition after three years, with no more than 30,000 miles on the clock, you should be able to sell it for £9,500, which is cash in hand for your next car i.e. the scirroco.
Also, as it is a personal loan, if you fall behind in your payments, they can't just take your car off you. You also have the option of selling the car at any time and paying off the loan early (after 1 year to take account of depreciation), which would be useful if you lost your job, or you got a girl preggars or you decided to go travelling or something.
Dealer finance deals are often not what they seem so compare every option in a spreadsheet and weigh up the pro's and con's, financially and the impact on quality of life should you situation change.
Personally I'd take the money and go travelling, and then come back and get a new car, or work dam hard so you can earn the £20,000 in three months.
When I was 21 I was earning £18k a year and had a brand new merc C-Class 230kompressor, loaded up with more options you could shake a stick at, costing £30k (that was 9 years ago). The monthly payments were something like £800 a month and I racked up 100,000 miles in 2 years as I had free fuel too!
If you're good, you don't need uni - I didn't go - but I do regret not going for the social skills you learn.

Thanks for all that.
Would hope to get a little bit more for than 9k after 3 years 11 or 12 would seem more realistic.
