View Full Version : "That is so Vulgar"

Today whilst adding some petrol to the Range Rover a strange eco mentalist gentleman driving a Toyota prius on the other side of the pump muttered that my choice of vehicle was "Vulgar"
So I went around to speak to the gentleman probably twice my age, and told him that if he had something to say then to say it to my face rather than mutter it to his self.
We then got into a conversation about how he felt my Range Rover was "Vulgar, it's killing the environment", to which I asked him how he'd come to that conclusion "well it’s a big V8 petrol drinker isn't it. To which I asked him to take a look at the tail gate and note the LPG filler socket and informed said gentleman it actually ran on LPG for most of its life, petrol only being used to fire the engine initially making it much cleaner and environmentally friendly.
I then asked the gentleman if he expected his car to be running on the roads in 22 years time to which he seemed flummoxed, I then asked him why he chose to drive a car which used a wide variety of exotic materials exported thousands of miles around the earth to build it and what he was thinking of doing with the toxic risk that the batteries inside it presented when they need replacing in a few years time and how he felt the prius would hold up with its recent track record of poor build quality.
I was then told that "my attitude is what’s killing the environment", to which I pointed out he hadn’t answered any of my questions which were perfectly valid and that I felt my attitude was one of a sensible approach to life - I have an old vehicle, I can fix it myself from parts of other old vehicle and think that material and environmentally wise that has got to me kinder due to the recycling
How can running a recyclable car on a clean fuel source for 22 year be more damaging to the environment? Hemp wearing enviro idiots!
- edit due to my poor speeeeling
If his car is ******* ECO-friendly.....what was he doing at the pump, filling the thing with fairy dust.

ironic that it's a pensioner driving the prius, passing judgement on your vehicle.
I wonder how he got about before he bought the prius? Milk float perhaps?

Oi! I'm not that bloody old! He was probably about 50, myself being a spritely 28
Theres a good episode of South Park where they all get a Prius and totally change the values they hold - sums him up quite well I imagine.

perhaps if you had doused this old environmentalist with some petrol, then lit him, he would have shut up. in fact, i would happily burn all owners of priusesesses.

I hate such people. He's probably forgetting that the batteries that power his car aren't biodegradable, which will just end up in landfill. Not exactly a saint when it comes to being eco-friendly then is he?
I'll admit, I don't like 4x4s that are used for the kids school run. It's completely pointless. You're safer in a big estate car. And it's more practical and cheaper to run. However, 4x4s that are used for what they were designed to do, going off-road, on dirt tracks, over fields with a horse box or whatever I totally do see the point, and completely understand why they own one.
Having been passenger in a Range Rover Vogue, I can say they seem very well built too and lovely to drive. They're a very good piece of engineering.
I hate all this eco-friendly ********. It's just another way to make us pay through the nose for something desirable with a big engine.

the more i think about it, it is such a waste of fuel. so uneconomic and polluting. there must be a better way to burn these hippies without using petrol. maybe drowning in a vat of veg oil would be a better idea.

Ah well then do you mean cold or hot oil? Because the hot veg oil would burn fossil fuels and that would be bad you know cus like of the polar ice caps!
I think it would be better to just feed them to hungry dogs, theres no waste then and the flesh gets recycled:confused:

Good on you Capn'
If theres one thing that really gets my pip it's the "Grow your own shoes wear them and then eat them" lobby.
Most of their rhetoric is coming from an orifice other than that normally associated with speech.
I always call the Prius the Pious as most of the drivers are lay eco preachers who have a personal mission to tell you how to live your life and by what authority does this idiot deem it his personal crusade to poke his nose into affairs which are none of his business?
They advocate everybody being forced to own only vehicles which can do 30mph enforced by a nanny state whose politicians have no intention of abiding by the laws they enforce on you and I.
The delicious irony here is that his car is far from eco friendly in the proper sense and by recycling and replacing parts as you do and running your vehicle on LPG for most of it's life you are far more eco friencly than this aged old hippy.
For the record I am 53 probably even older than him but are not fooled by this eco intellectual claptrap.

Captain sir I admire you for not punching his ignorant lights out.
I love telling Jehovah Witnesses to ****off, I would quite simply tell the t**t in the Pious to go suck his own **** whilst I pollute the atmosphere, in fact I would of told him I had de-catted it to add more flavour to the air.
What a knobsock.

What a knob, people have no right to make a comment like that, what one person does with their hard earnt money is no one else’s business; personally I would have gone ballistic and given him what for-*****! I would have asked him if he was aware of the environmental damage the production of the batteries for his Pious are causing. At least by buying a Land Rover product you are keeping British workers in, jobs, not Japs! All prats like him should be stuffed into that Icelandic volcano…Bloody enviromentalist religion…

Funny you mention JW's Malc.
My wife had one visit and he asked her to bring god into her life at our front door.
When she politely declined his kind offer, he attempted to stop her closing the door with his foot telling her in preventing her from closing the door he wanted to stop her from closing her soul to god.
She called me in and I politely informed him that in five seconds the door would be closing either with or without his foot inside.
Where do these people get off?
If I want Jehovah to be in my life it will be at my time of choosing, they should just clear off and leave people alone, I wouldn't be surprised if God had told him in a vision to buy himself a Pious.

The JW's in my area are no fun, they don't even bother to try and get in the house anymore. They just give you a magazine then walk away, where's the fun in that? :(

I used to answer the door to JW's with vampire teeth with a little fake blood dribbling down my mouth for dramatic effect. Informing them I wanted to drink their blood finished it off nicely.
They don't come round here any more :(

When will people realise that there is absolutely no such thing as a green car!? I'm not going to bash 'environmentalism', it makes sense to use less energy & less materials, but life is so stupidly complex that people who obsess over one of the myriad aspects of it really need to stop & look around once in a while, & randomly accosting people is unacceptable.
As pointed out, the embodied energy in mining the materials, refining the ores, manufacturing the components & then assembling the car & shipping it to wherever will be a lot more than running an old car & maintaining it with recycled parts for quite a while!!
I think of Earth as a huge spaceship, which it literally is. Once you've eaten all the grub on a spaceship & knackered the air filters etc., everybody onboard is going to pop their clogs! There's no mission control to send a supply ship to help out when the planet's kaput. However, I need to use my car for work to ensure food & shelter for my family. I also enjoy driving for leisure. Even if there was a viable zero-emission technology for powering vehicles, what about power generation to make them? 'Environmentalists' always tell us that nuclear power is evil, yet it produces electricity whether the wind is blowing or not & releases no CO2 at all. Granted, then you've got the waste to deal with as a side effect, but then uranium came out out of the ground, so put it back in it, entombed in concrete, very deep down. Anyway, I'm waffling, but I think we can safely say that this geezer has much more to consider than the Captain's Range Rover. 'Environmentalists' usually over-simplify the issues & get people's backs up & thus hamper sensible debate about it all.
Oh yeah Captain, I'd have just told him to **** off. That's about as considered & reasonable as he was. :approve:

oh yes please. if i could afford one of those, i would be able to afford to leave it running all the time, only turning the engine off to service it, just to upset some environmentalists.

I wouldnt worry about it, at the end of the day hes driving a prius. If he had any sense he would realise the points you made to him which would make him think twice before muttering. Let alone the cost difference between the vehicles!
He bought into the eco hype and now he has to keep it up to save face if he does ever realise it. He doesnt use any common sense - dont let it work you up.
I just sit back and laugh waiting until the next breaking bbc news report damning another prius/prius style car.
Sometimes you have to read between the lines, people get sucked into the eco debate. My 1.6 has emissions which are pretty low and its 13/14 years old, even on par with some of the newer environmental models. More hype than fact imo.

Yup, the A2/Polo 1.4 TDi will do knocking on 80 MPG & you can get a Polo up for just over £2000, don't know on A2 prices. A LOT cheaper than a Prius or other hybrid jiggery-pokery contraption.

Well done captain it's great to hear someone sticking up for what they have and not just ignoring the comments. But I do believe you should have agreed with his personal views then drove over the top of his car and with a two fingered victory salute told him that that's one less car screwing the enviroment:biglaugh: .
