mkv golf sdi making low speed rattling noise

hi, this is my first post as this is the first problem I've had with my 05 2.0 SDI (apart from the lack of engine power!). it's done 27k

I was driving low speed in traffic approx 5-10mph and I heard a rattling noise coming the front end, the noise seemed like a rattle/like something was
caught. after 2-3 seconds it went away, but intermittantly comes back, so far only at low speed.
I didn't notice any obvious change in revs etc it seemed normal.
dropped the car into my local hi-q opposite work for an investigation but they couldn't find any obvious problems.

does anyone have an idea what could be causing this sound or where to check next?
