Hi all-,
I wonder if anyone can help with a problem.
Last week- I took battery off to clear usual crap under it . I 'did' use a plug in memory-saver' (it worked ok).
However- yesterday- I switched on Sat Nav-and off I went .
Sat nav wasn't working correctly. Audio Voice said-'Position not located on a digitalised road'. It also tells me to take next turn etc- even when there is no turn to take.
Display was miles out and it remains like that.
I think the system is a RNS4.
I have basic operating instructions--but it does not say how to check for satelite availability etc .
Anyone got any ideas ?.
Any help would be appreciated .
Thanks, Pete

I imagine the GPS antenna has failed. £15 from Ebay for one you can stick under the dash - cheaper and saves you dropping the headlining to access the one on the roof.

Is it the RNS-D unit you have? Google a picture if your unsure

Sorry- not too sure . Its the one with display in centre of instrument cluster --if thats any help.
Just seems strange that I had battery out few days sooner . Maybe its just coincidence ?.

Ahh you have the older BNS-4.x system then.

Could well be coincidence, if it's recognising your position wrongly then I suspect an antenna fault of some sort.

Thanks . BNS-4X rings a bell with me .

I just think there must be some way to check if antenna-is working or not . I could be wrong though -I often am:(

A VAG-COM scan would point you in the right direction

ok- thanks .
Ive just been playing around with it- and up popped info on screen .
HW VERSION
BNS 4.2
SW VERSION OO4O

Also said SATELLITES- 0 OF 8 .
Guess that says it all huh .
So- next question is - is it easy to get at back of unit to connect up a new antenna ??.
Does glovebox have to be dropped to fit antenna to the top of it .
Also- has anyone any experience of fitting one and 'does it work ok ' ?.
Thanks

Doesnt the BNS unit live in the boot? Or is it elsewhere? Is that where you put the Nav CD? (I cant remember for the A6)

If so the antenna connection should be on the back of that?

The antennas you can get do work. I got one for £12 from Ebay for my A4 and it worked a treat. Or you can pay a fortune for a proper Audi one.

Yes-- It is in the boot . My brain didnt figure it out logically :o.
Feel a bit daft now !!.
I've looked on ebay- but cant tell if those antennas are suitable for BNS--it doesn't say -or type of connection-so Ive asked seller a question 2 hours ago --no reply as yet .
Nomatter how hard Ive looked on google etc-- info on BNS is very scarce .

If new antenna fits ok- question is - where to site it !!.
Theres plenty of space alongside NAV CD gubbins -under nearside wing- but would it 'work' there ?.

Another point though is antenna currently on roof--isn't too far from NAV gubbins- (unlike newer ones)--so- maybe if I cant get a ebay one-- a new proper one shouldn't be too hard to fit ?.

A new one woudnt be that hard to fit. You'd need to lower the headlining and remove a few bits of trim though I imagine. You wont get a new Audi antenna from Ebay for £10 though!

It should be the same Fakra type connector they all use these days. I'd fit a cheapo one and then move it around the rear cabin until you can find an area where it gets a good reception.

Fair point !!
As soon as I can find one that fits-- I'll try it . Maybe on back parcel shelf would be best .
No reply off ebay seller yet --I'll try another one .

I'm just a tight bugger, That'd be my main reason for trying an Ebay one!

I havent a clue what Audi charge for one, if it's under £100 I would be shocked!

It just gets worse .
Removed the gubbins box- and connector is nothing like those ebay ones .
Its just like a small co-ax -- maybe 5mm diam .

Have a look for a loose connection on the control module.

Thanks for response-its appreciated.
I have checked connections (as good as I can)-- and they look ok.
By 'control module' -I assume you mean the black box in the boot into which 2 connecters plugs in ?.
Parden me for not being clued up (and a bit thick) on anything involving this sort of stuff .

I wonder if anyone knows if the 'black box' is interchangeable with others from different audi models ? a4,a3 etc .
The number on mine is 4B5 919 897 A (this is stamped on holding bracket.
Another number 8 618 842 290 is stamped on back of actual unit near to connectors.

Reason I ask is - there are similar looking units for sale on Ebay.

Many thanks

Just taken it out of car -removed sleeve- and part number is actually 4B0 919 887 E
There are a few on ebay right now - with same part number ! does this mean they are compatible ?.
If so-it may be worth a 'punt' if they go cheap enough .

ps - number stamped on casing AUZ etc-- I guess this is a serial number of the actual unit ??.

OK - Problem sorted .

Saw a 'control module ( the black box of gubbins--that sits in the boot) on ebay- so- took a stab at it !! £60 ish .
Even had a later DX disc included.
Fitted it- and hooked it up to the 'sharks fin' antena.
Sats appeared one by one .
So- everything ok now .
Thanks to members who replied and suggested remedies.

I Always take the time to post a solution in the hope it may help others in the future .

Hi Pete,

Thank God i came across your thread!

I have just bought a 2005 Allroad and am experiencing problems with Sat Nav to those you described earlier in the post.

I have a few questions that i would be extremely grateful if you could answer:

Whereabouts in the boot will i find my control module?
What exactly did you type into ebay search to find the control module? (its bringing me up loads of control modules for just about everything else in a car - but no sat nav)
Do i need to buy a new (sharksfin or other) antenna too?

many thanks,

Az
