Have problem with Coupe, it idles solidly and starts etc ok.
When Revving at idle with pedal it will sometimes pop on overun.
Basically hesitation and lack of power. It will drive but just no oomph in getting there.

Wondered if any one had this before? I have changed the cam belt and pulleys, but they are all aligned correctly...

Ive not looked too deeply into it yet, but plugs look newish, and not done any compression checks yet.

OK today checked Cam belt alignment - Good
Changed |Spark plugs
Changed ignition leads
re-soldered ECU relay
And tried adjusting Distributor, which moves the timing mark backwards and fwd's as it should...

But still running poorly....Took off dizzy cap and it looks like centre contact has become stuck in cap!!! Surely this must be the problem ?

Have just picked up a new cap and rotor arm....Will find out tomorrow i hope!!!:o

Beat me to it, I see you worked on the ECU relay..

Good luck with the new Cap!

You need a fault code read and at the same time the ignition timing needs to be set. This can only be done by putting the ECU into basic settings mode in Group 000 and then with the engine revs held at between 2000 and 2500 rpm, the distributor is rotated until the timing is at 6° BTDC.

Blimey thanks Crusher good gen there... So do i need vag com/fault reader to put ecu into basic or way round it?

Thanks for timing info, will be of help tomorrow very much appreciated.

Can i hold revs at 2000-2500 while adjusting dizzy? Obviously 2 man job.:(

You need a registered version of VAG-COM, no way around it. Setting the timing without having the ECU in Basic Settings is a waste of time, it will be out. I do it on my own, jam the light pointing art the flywheel and hold the revs whilst rotating the dizzy.

Good stuff, thanks for reply. Now I do have access to a gendan fault reader and tester, can I use this to enter ecu basic mode?
It has all the audi software, with resets and test installed?
Guessing this will allow me to do timing?
Thanks again

I don’t know anything about the Gendan, sorry.

Ok it looks like me being a wally!!! Had the plug firing order incorrect!! Can anyone confirm it should be 1-3-4-2 and which way the dizzy rotor arm rotates? Clockwise or counter clockwise.

I now have my adapter lead for OBD connection so will try that for setting up correctly.....

Had a little go today, by moving dizzy but although now revs freely it will not idle!!!

Will hook up lead and diagnostics tomorrow!! So frustrating!!!

Yes it is 1342 (if you had it 1432 that is Bug flat four order) and it rotates clockwise as you look down at it but have someone crank it over with the cap off to get it clear in your head. Number 1 is the cap point over the notch in the top of the dizzy body.

Thanks crasher, it is 1-3-4-2 now, and in the clockwise rotation.... I'd hoped to get timing roughly right by hand then fine tune with ECU mode, but with all aligned it now will not bloomin idle!!!

This has to be alignment somewhere!!

Cranked engine by hand to TDC and all timing marks aligned, Had rotor arm aligned central with notch on distributor body. And the car starts and runs well, but will not hold idle!!! Have cleaned the ICV to no avail.....

My good ol dad is gonna check it tonight, finger crossed....:zx11:

If timing is 6 deg BTDC at 2000-2500 revs where should idle be? TDC?

Thanks again for super quick replies...Much appreciated:biglaugh:

The setting is only specified as being 6° BTDC at 2000 to 2500 rpm, there is no other specification, if there was they would not quote what they do. There is no shortcut, it has to be done properly, getting it right otherwise would be pure luck.

Yep thats right thanks crasher....Car running well at moment, but will fine tune today with ECU . Thanks again for info and help, very much appreciated and good knowledge i didn't know bout the timing setup....Cheers :approve:
