Hi everyone,

This is my first post (so please be gentle) We have just purchased our (sold as seen) R reg Passat TDi 110 with 145K miles, and we are having a few issues.

I purchaced the car at a very good price for my wife to use for work and run the family around and we are very happy with it until we found that on the odd occasion we would unlock the car and drive down the road and find that we have no lights or indicators, wipers - nothing only hazard lights. If we turn the car off and lock it and unlock it from the key fob it works fine.

I am not sure if this is an electrical short or the imobiliser not working correctly. has anyone else had this issue?

Second thing is we have a rattle from the breaks when we apply the breaks. I have removed the pads and found a raised shoulder on the bottom of the pad where it hangs over the center of the break disc by about 10mm. It looks as if we have the wrong disc's on the car. When i went to my local motor factors they assure me that i have the correct break pads. Has any one else had this issue?

Cheers for your time

From what i have read on this forum it sounds like your comfort control module is playing up. Its probably down to water ingress due to blocked drain holes under the battery.
easy enough to sort if you're fairly competent with the spanners.
is your carpet wet on the passenger side? pull it up and check under it.

Your second fault could just be down to worn discs but also wrong discs, wrong pads, maybe even wrong callipers. If it was mine i would be taking measurements of everything and checking with a manual to see if its got the wrong stuff fitted.

Good luck mate.

im guessing your passat is a mark 4. so im basing these figures on that

vented discs = 256mmx20mm 4 studded wheel .

solid disc = 256mmx13mm

pads for the car are all the same shape , only difference being the pads for solid discs had a few extra mm of brake lining . The 97to 2005 passat however had 2 kinds of front pads.

caliper was made for the car by Girling , it should have the number 54 stamped on it somewhere along its face.

Your electrical problems are probably due to the terminal 30 voltage relay on the relay plate under the drivers dash. Get another one from VW and swap it. Unless you know what you are doing, it's best to just swap it rather than test for a fault. It could also be a wiring fault in the same area. If it is the relay it is a simple fix.

Hi there

First, thanks for the great response and making us feel welcome. We have located the issue and we think we have got the wrong disc's. We have got an R-reg mark 5 with the 5 stud wheels. so we have a choice of 3 different diameter sizes of vented discs.
We now need to find out the minimum distance between the caliper and the outter edge of the disc or the correct diameter of the disc as it looks as if our discs are too small.

again cheers for the response,

Gaz

Think that this will need to be a sunday afternoon job with several cups of tea!

Thanks for the response

I guessing that i will need to remove the battery and tray for this one then? Last time i checked the passenger footwell was dry.

Cheers for the response.

Not nearly as bad as it sounds - this thread will help:
