speedometer not working

i have just bought a vw bora on a v reg 1.6 and the speedometer is not working and the fuel gage keeps bouncing to empty when i take a turn. i have checked all fueses in the car and the 3 under the bonnet near the battery but all are fine. what else could i check to make it work again

I have the same problem on my Passat 1.8 98 model. This occured when I unfortually drove into a pond due to heavy rain.
My car is usually parked in a heated garage, where it seemed to have a short time positive effect.
