Have a few symptoms that point to thermostat and possibly temp gauge sensor fault:
Symptoms are as follows:-

Car is taking much longer to get to normal temperature than normal. Once normal is reached it stays there no problem.
The temperature gauge will on occasion drop to zero then after maybe 30 seconds to a few minutes return to normal.

The car is running a behaving fine though the MPG I think is down by 1/2mpg.

I intend to change the thermostat first and hopefully I can get a replacement and not the whole unit (£80 someone suggested on one thread). Question is the housing is sat behind the alternator and looks a little awkward to access. The Haynes manual tells you how to remove but does not suggest anything is in the way, whereas to me it looks difficult to access. I think the whole unit removed, dis-connect pipes and dis-connect wiring then releasing the thermostat when it is all out on the bench. Anyone done this or suggestions please?

Depending on the outcome of this I may replace the gauge sensor at the back of the block, don't know if this is an easy job or not as again the access looks limited. Any suggestions if anyone has done this before?

From VW you can only buy the complete unit under part number 06B 121 111 K which is about £70 but it is available from Behr, Motorad, Triscan and Vemo. No one appears to list the thermostat separately.

Cheers :beerchug:
£70 (+VAT no doubt) is not too bad anyway.
