Hi All,

I cant find the thread so I thought I would start a new one.

The D.R.L's I would be supplying will come from the U.K. Fitting can be carried out along with H.ID and interior light upgrades etc.....

Pictures to follow very soon!!!!!!

Here is a link of someone who has already carried out the conversion I was talking about :(.

A point to note I will start supplying these kits threw the U.K and at a discount of course to all members on the forum. The quality of the design/ le.d's I will be using will far superior to those seen in the link below.

The first 10 firm orders will get a free upgrade of l.e.d canbus sidlight bulbs :D:D:D

So will you get a pair like ths:

With the same curve running down into the centre like this:

They will look like the above but far better quality l.e.d's. Also my passat will get the first set fitted so we all know there is no issues before I launch the range :D.

These lights will simply stay on all the time. Maybe run brighter on there own and dim down slightly when other lights are used. T.B.C.

The idea of the chevron style came from being followed by one of the new Merc's.

Like I quoted before forget the audi look.

How will these be enabled and what extra wiring is involved?

Do they simply swap over for the standard indicator housing?

I'm not a fan of cheap LED stick on jobs, but these look really OEM. I would take a set depending on prices and ease of fitting...

Will the front indicators still be effective with these bright LED's right next to them or will they get lost in the glow?

That is correct. They will simply swap over from standard indicator housing.

So will look they have always been there :D:D:D.

Cant say to much at the moment as they are in development stage. I have been considering dimming the led's when sidelights/dipped are applied so that they match the other lights.

Also having the l.e.d.s in 2 colours so when you indicate all l.e.d.s will turn yellow ;);). Need to see how it works/looks on the car before final design is agreed.

Basically think as above but far better quality/and reserach and development.

Possible polycarbonate lens as plastic or glass will need replacing when a stone chip hits.

Any ideas or suggestions. Please contact me.

The only thing is if all ideas above are included price may reflect this.

Geniune VW are around £45.00 each side. Basically what you have now.

Now that would be great. You've got some serious experimenting with prototypes to do  This R&D might take you a while... might be worth thinking about the B7 too :p

I would be seriously interested though, this is the kind of subtle facelift that will keep the car looking fresh.

Would be interested, but the ones (drls) in the link aren't really noticeable from the front in daylight.

This may or may not be beacause the indicator housing is on the corners and therefore pointing at a 45ish degree angle.

For me, the whole point of drls is to be noticed from the front - what do you think rapport?

From a 45 degree angle it does look brighter.

I might be interested if they are a simple plug and play, have you noticed on the audi DRL's that when the car indicators are applied the DRL's dim slightly untill the indicator is turned off.

I think these passat ones should be 2 separate colours, one orange row for the indiacator and one white row for the DRL, id like to have the DRL stay on even when you indicate aslong as you could see the indicator and the DRL didnt outshine the orange.

Funny this thread should come along, just after I've finished tinkering with some DRLs. Make my effort look very DIY!

I had 20 LEDs doing nothing, so decided to stick them in the indicator housing along the rear edge, simply because that was the easiest, quickest thing to do for a lazy person.

The image below shows them lit during the daytime. There is no visible difference to the OEM indicatior housing.

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n250/podwin/Cars/Passat/26-02-10_1159.jpg

The image shows the glow they produce along the entire length of the indicator housing:

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n250/podwin/Cars/Passat/26-02-10_1743.jpg

They'll do for now until the ones in this thread are ready.

Think that from 2011 every new car built will have a DRL option - not sure if the UK will become like Sweden and Norway where they always have to be on... 2010 or previous models don't 'have' to have them enabled (some simply can't be), but like me, it's a nice easy option to retro-enable on the passat...

Quatrelle
21-05-2010, 08:12 PM
Dunno if it's an option or obligatory for new cars here, but most I've seen have them on.

Phil_P
21-05-2010, 11:17 PM
My understanding is that by 2011 every new car built must have DRLs. Current thinking is that most will simply implement that by having sidelights/dipped main beam(??) on and that manufacturers might choose to fit LEDs to premium models within their range to further differentiate them from lower specified models.

My understanding is that they will be on permanently. Not much point having them if you can turn them off. We have lights atm and don't turn them on so little would change.

Hi mate,

Will sort out a video with the drl's on. Yep they are brighter than the headlights and sidelights with a really nice white colour. I'm tempted with HID headlights too.

The problem is that I bought led sidelights and now they look more blue compared to the drls so I may change back to some free sidelights I got that as they look a bit more white.

thats a good price, hope he sorts his leds out

as I understand it will only be applicable to new cars built in 2011

at the moment they are wired to my sidelights and I am still in the process of sorting my vagcom out to enable them as scandinavian drls so will go off when the main headlights are on

I still need to fit the new led wing mirror indicators too!

I asked my local dealer about this, and they said it would be too much labour and cost too much.

I then gave them the part number which helped them to find a kit for my car. It is a new kit and they do not know themselves what it involves, i.e. a relay, loom etc.

It is priced at £51 plus 0.7 hours labour.

They have ordered it from Germany and should be with them in two weeks.

It will be interesting to find out what it is exactly, although the end result must be the similar to the Golfs I've seen running with 50% main beams.

There were two kits on the system, one for cars with foglights and one without.

So I wonder what the difference is between them and having DRLs turned on via VAG-COM (like me)... Do they use a different bulb then? (can't see pics), because when mine were turned on with vagcom they use the dipped beams, and from what I can tell, at full brightness too...

I guessing it could be a resistor pack to run the lights at a reduced brightness.

So does it just set the dip lights to "always on" at normal intensity then, or does it do anything different?

Wouldn't mind the alarm "chirp" either

Need to get me one of them cables :)

I just turn the dips on instinctively at this stage when I get in the car - upgraded to aftermarket Xenons so it makes a big difference at night too.

The DRL/indicator strip on the last pages looks nice, though I'm also tempted by the Audi-style integrated headlight/LED strip unit!!

It's not, it's at something like 88% brightness by default, but you can also adjust the brightness percentage via another field in the central electronics module. At 88% you can hardly tell the difference between DRL and dipped. Yet to see another US DRL enabled B6 yet, if I see you I will flash!! (coventry here);)

I've got bored of waiting about to see if these DRLs are ever coming so I'm going to give it a go myself. The plan is to rewire the indicators to the side lights and have orange 501 side light bulbs which I already have.

The I'm goin to custom make the DRLs using the indicator houseing by opening it up and putting in a couple of LED strips. New indictor housings are on there way. Then using vagcom, I'll set the sidelights as DRLs.

The end result should show something conpletetly OEM from the outside when off and something OEM when there turned on, similar to the new R Golf.

Awaiting parts but all being well they should be done in the next week or so.

Hi G Black. This is one of the must haves for the passat :approve::approve:. Shame I will never see DRL's fitted to mine. Long story short my mate has not sorted the lights also a new job with company car.

VW dealership phoned today saying the DRL kit had arrived from Germany.

They have actually got 2 versions in, one for cars without front fogs, and one for cars with front fogs.

My car has front fogs retro fitted so we are thinking the kit for no front fogs will apply, but they will see for me.

The cost will be £75 all inc. They are going to fit when it has its service on the 9th.

I will post back what it actually does, as the dealership doesn't even know themselves yet!

I do not believe there is a difference to how it will appear.

I think it is more to do with the system within the car, i.e. fog equipped cars have a different CECM. The kit may plug into this, so has to be different to achieve the same result.

Can you adjust the brightness through VCDS or is this what the £75 resistor pack is going to do. Are your dip beams on full or at a reduced brightness?

If I can find someone with VCDS near me I'm going to have mine enabled. I may give sharkperfomance a ring and ask them.

:rolleyes:Finally had the official VW kit fitted, and it is mostly just the DRL activation in vagcom.

They fit a new light switch, which lights up the side light symbol to show DRLs are on, this is why the 'kit' is specific concerning front fog lights.

As mentioned in the thread on another forum I linked to, all the lights are on, side, dipped, tail even number plate lights, just like turning them on yourself.

There is however a slight difference in the brightness of the headlights when flicking the light switch to dipped deam, as if when in DRL mode they are slightly dimmer.

Quite agree.

And it did look silly today, driving home from work in blazing sunshine to see cars with their headlights on. Logic says it's a good idea, but I guess it will take some getting used to, not being in control of something simple like deciding whether or not to turn your lights on.

No they don't, but the indicators themselves are bright enough that you can't miss them...

As it turns out I'm not sure if I'm happy with them "in the metal" to be honest.

The LEDs used are a different color than the 6000k-style LEDs I have installed in the side/parking lights and the dip beam HID kit I have, and they only really show up well in darker conditions. Plus they really only show up well if you look at them from the right angle.. I think the slight overhang above the strip overshadows them a bit.

Few pics attached to show what I mean...

Well you'll need to take off the bumper to get at them, but no, that aside it's fairly straightforward. No VAG COM required.
I have them wired into the sidelights so they come on with them (I always turn the lights on when I get into the car anyway so it's no big deal), and I've decided to change the sidelights for "whiter" LEDs and see how that looks as they are growing on me :)

After washing the car or after it's been raining and I open the boot lid, water runs round the lights and comes out through interior. Planning to have them replaced under warranty and hopefully blag my way into gettin the right hand side one with the clear lense. Then to keep it legal I'll put a chrome red bulb in so it still glows red but looks clear.

Just to update this thread...

I'm sorry to say that things have worked out rather badly for me on this one. I ordered the DRL/indicator strip from that site (Iulian is his name), paid my money (€230 so not cheap!) on 31/7/2010 and waited....

By 18/8 there was still no sign of them so I emailed again to be told they'd be sent "next week". In the interim the rest of the LEDs had died so now I have no front left indicator!

Still no sign by 30/8 so I emailed again to ask for my money back, only to be told they'd been shipped. A few more mails went back and forth before they FINALLY arrived on 13/9.
In the interim we agreed on a €30 refund to cover the delay.

I duly got them installed and all was well... until 3/1/2011 when I noticed half of the orange LEDs on the left hand side seemed to be dead. So I emailed Iulian again and was told he'd prepare a replacement. Because of the cost (to me) of getting them removed and shipped to him (in Romania) we agreed that he would send replacements for both sides, and was planning to move to Ireland anyway.

By March there was no sign so a few more emails went back and forth until he told me on 29/4 that they'd been sent.

It's now 24/5 and they STILL haven't arrived and the last reply I got from this guy was on that date despite me replying to demand a full refund and I'll post these defective lights (that in the end only worked for 3 months!) back to wherever he likes! I've also had the car checked by VW at the service last week and they're telling me it'll cost about €150 to fix this mess! :(

It's probably too late for me at this stage but I just wanted to post this up in case anyone else is thinking of buying anything from this guy!!! :zx11:
