Is there an instrument or tool that I can connect to either end of a connection (identified from the circuit diagrams in the back pages of my Haynes manual) which can tell me, or at least hint, if the connection is "weak" anywhere along it's length? You can imagine how useful that might be - considering I'm trying to identify an "intermittent low voltage" error.

There are tools that can find the point of a short circuit or wire break. They rely on sending an a/c signal down a diisconnected wire. They are quite expensive and won't find an intermitant fault unless it happens during the test. What is your problem...

Thanks Martin1810 - I'm getting this on vagcom:
18010 - Power Supply Terminal 30: Voltage too Low
P1602 - 35-10 - - - Intermittent

A good start might be to measure the resistance. Not the pinnacle of fault finding but should be more or less 0 Ohms. You could also check to see if there is any continuity between the cable and the chassis with both ends of the cable disconnected.

I would fit a new relay. It's usually poor relay contacts that lead to this. You could try cleaning all the connections on the relay plate under the dash. Pull out the relays and clean the exposed terminals. The problem is usually the contacts in the relay so it often needs replacing.

Thanks as always Martin1810 - much appreciated. I've looked at EuroCarParts but they don't seem to do much "relay" wise. Is there a dealer somewhere that sells a relay "pack" so I can replace them all and have done with it - rather than investing in test equipment - it might be the most cost effective and (considering my electrical skills) effective option?

Try x-contact relief relay J59 at local dealers. Costs about £12 I think. It may have 231 on top.
