What's that mirror-flap thingie for?

Just in front of my rear-view mirror is a cream-coloured plastic "flap" that folds down for no apparent reason. Can anyone enlighten me what it's for? Don't mean to sound stupid but I can see no reason for it - however knowing the German designers behind the VW I imagine it's there for a perfectly sensible reason.
