Hi Everyone,

please can someon help. . .?

My wife has a 51 Reg Polo 1.0L that is now displaying
the ABS light on the dashboard.

We have owned the car from new, and it has just 15k miles on the clock.

One careful lady owner, supermarket and school runs only !

The problem is intermittent, sometimes the light is comes on and stays on, other times it comes on and goes off.

I'm suspecting a faulty ABS sensor ???

Am i right ?

If so, has anyone got any ideas how much it may cost to replace/fix at my local VW dealer ?

As always, your thoughts and help would be much appreciated,

Many Thanks

Hi Adam

It does sound to me like a fault with the ABS sensor. What I would suggest is visiting a local garage or VW specialist (cheaper than dealer:) ) and let them plug it into the diagnostic machine, this will tell them which sensor, or any other component for that matter.

If it is a sensor, try your local GSF or Euro Car Parts, may be cheaper

Thanks Stuart,

we don't have a local VW Non-Dealer specialist. . .

My local garage which usually MOT's and oil changes the car, ran a diagnostic on my VW Passat diagnosing a faulty ECU.

They suggested it would cost up to £1000 to fix.

VW sorted the problem for £88, and diagnosed a faulty switch
on the coolant system.

Thus, I'm reluctant to take it back to a non-VW outfit.

Any ideas how easy the job is to do myself ?

If so, any ideas how many ABS sensors the car has, and
how I can tell which one has failed ?

Sorry about all the questions, you must fell like your on VW Mastermind !

Your help is appreciated,

Cheers,

Adam :biglaugh:

Mmmm... Think they tried to "rip you off"

Most cars have 4 ABS sensors, one on each wheel, any of which will bring up an ABS fault. They are fitted in each wheel hub, usually about 20mm in diameter, held by a bolt with a single cable out.

The problem is,if you do not get it plugged into a diagnostic machine you will not know which is at fault :(

Many Thanks Stuart,:D

I'll take the wheels off first. . and see if I can see any obvious damage to any of the ABS sensors.

Failing that I'm off to VW for a diagnostic.

I'll keep you posted,

Regards,

Adam

The last time I had a fault with my ABS Sensors my VW mechanic charged me £175.....if that helps....

Is this possible to do yourself once you find out which sensor is faulty?

Got ABS light on and was thinking of getting one of those vag-com cables and the freebie shareware software to diagnose which one is at fault...

My ABS light is now permanantly on at last diagnosis it was the ABS sensor, even from GSF my mechanic charged me £175 each, loathe to pay this...

So, has anybody done it yourself? Think the sensor is only ~£20 from gsf.....just wondered whether it is soemthing you can do yourself?

sorry, for incomplete post

ok we changed this outself the part cost 15.57 from GSF, but the light still remains on and the same error is coming up

1 Fault Found:

00283 - Front Left ABS Wheel Speed Sensor (G47)

Cool, any tips or did you manage to find a guide anywhere?

Did you clear the fault (i.e. via vag-com etc) and then it comes back?

yep, it comes back after clearing the fault and changing the faulty sensor

thinking it might be a faulty new sensor we are going to get that replaced, then we will have a clearer idea on what it could be.

Was it easy enough to do? The sensor replacement?

ifti_a
29-06-2010, 06:10 PM
yep

quite easy

first take off the wheel, then take the sensor nut off using a allen key,

the sensor is extremly hard to pull back, its kind of stuck in, it will thipe this helpsake some pulling and turning to pull it back and out.

carefully disconnect the wire and that should be it

hpe this helps

my light remains on even though the sensor has been repaced twice plus diag software still shows a fault with the sensor

I have just had this on an A2 which is almost identical to the Polo 9N as it uses the same suspension and ABS parts. Initially we had open circuit codes from the sensors which did not respond to new sensors just being plugged in, eventually we found both front harness were damaged and we had to solder in replacement harnesses on both sides. This resulted in both open circuits going but only restored the speed pulse to the right. We then found that the CV joint on the nearside was damaged and had eaten away the sensor and the CV joint itself has been Loctited into the wheel bearing and will not come out even with a 10 tonne press on it. This is a sales car from a garage and has been horribly messed around with. Next I have to fit a new hub carrier, wheel bearing and hub.

Crasher - that is crazy! Good effort mate!

Hmm...ifti_a, sorry at a loss....

Once I get my **** in gear and buy a vag-com cable, may end-up having same issue!

Hi,

Now a proud owner of a vag-com cable... got the fault code:

01276 - ABS Hydraulic Pump (V64)
012 - Electrical Fault in Circuit

Any ideas?

I checked the fuse in the compartment next to dash, was fine (tested by switching with wiper one).

I heard there is a 2nd fuse on top of the battery? Is that right?

Check the fuses on top of the battery, the strip one may be cracked but often you can only see this if the fuse is removed.

Sweet will do...

Do you know what fuses are for what on top of the battery - can't seem to find a fuse chart for it?

There's the strip fuses and then the blade fuses in the small compartment.

The big red arrows point to the two ABS fuses.

Cheers - fuses 6 and 7; had kinda gathered that from the big red arrows! :)

Just wondered what all the others were for?

Cheers guys...just a quickie to say thanks; fuse 6 had blown. Replaced at a cost of £2.65 and all is well again.

I do wonder what caused it to go though!

The pump takes a high current, which over time breaks down the fuse; it is nothing to worry about.

Hi,ive got a vw polo 1.4 twist and my ABS light came on , i took it to my brilliant local garage who spent ages trying to find and sort out the fault but couldnt, so in the end i took it to the vw garage who found it was just a fuse in the engine bay!!! nothing wrong with the ABS at all hope maybe this helps someone out there,i only joined to let people know!!!
