17.99 is fiarly cheap for 4ltr or 5ltr of average oil.

The top stuff is at atound £60 for 5ltr.

In the case of VW Audi oils, yes. Some of the Amsoil ones are very expensive. In other cases, the performance oils are the expensive ones. Silkolene Pro S is supposed to be £54 for 5L, Redline around £50 for 3.7L and Motul 300V is about £30 for two litres.

Those are just the ones we stock and we won't sell oils that we consider overpriced. Royal Purple engine oil is between £18 and £20 per litre. There are also the new oils coming out for the Nissan GTR that make RP look cheap.

i know it sounds daft but will audi supply the best oil to use? or is there an aftermarket oil that is better?

my car is always used for short stop start journeys

this was for 1 litre, my g/f came home at 6.30 last night and the oil min warning had popped up so couldn't go to audi at that point and she needed the car for this morning :( so i had to go to the shell garage, didn't really want to leave it till the weekend to top it up

Believe it or not, you'd be as well advised to go to your dealer for oil. Its about £10-£11 / litre from memory. You don't have to go to Audi. A VW agent will carry the same.
You need Quantum Longlife III (which is Castrol Edge re-branded) if you are on longlife / variable servicing.
-or- Quantum Platinum (which is also a Castrol oil - 5w/40) if you are on fixed / 10k service schedule. (£8 ish)

They should supply the correct oil. What model/year do you have?

Why is that people are still querying what oil to use in their car? VAG are very specific on what oil is suitable for their range of engines and is fully covered in the car's manual.
When the PD diesel engines were designed VAG recognised that the cam loading by the unit injectors was significantly higher than normal cam loading. So VW worked with the lubrication oil manufacturers and established a very specific specification to prevent excessive cam wear. Initially only a few oil manufacturers were VW approved for this application e.g. Fuchs in Germany. Over time most of the more reputable suppliers were VW approved.
Only these approved oil suppliers are allowed to specify these spec numbers on their oil containers ( a bit like the CE mark on electrical goods).
If an oil container does not specify the VW spec numbers on their container then they are not approved for vehicles requiring these specifications.
Initially the VW oil spec numbers for PD engines were 506.01 for long life (variable service interval) or 505.01 for fixed interval service (1 yr/10,000 miles). When diesel particulate filters were introduced for diesel engines the approved oil spec for engines having this filter was changed. VW spec 507.00 is now specified for both service intervals for car engines with DPF. All these spec Nos. apply to diesel engines.
If in doubt read your manual.

It seems that VW specs aren't as simple as they are made out to be, judging on the number of dealers that use a 10w-40 semi synthetic oil.

I should add that 507 spec oil is approved for PD non DPF engines . Thus most dealers now supply 507 spec oil for all PD and later engines ( some commercial range engines are different).
Semi synthetic oils cannot meet VW spec requirements for PD and later engines.

Absolutely, we get a lot of emails from customers that know that, but the dealership has put a bog-standard 10w-40 in

Quantum Longlife III (which is Castrol Edge re-branded) :beerchug:

Forgot to mention this earlier, but it's not. Quantum Longlife III is an oil, made by Castrol (I believe) to meet VW specs. To my knowledge it doesn't meet BMW, Merc etc specs, unless by chance as it would require the use of a different additive pack, but in order to keep costs down, they use a basic additive pack just to meet the VW ones.
