Hi ,

My car is currently on a time/distance service routine and the manual states I can use VW505 01 or VW507. I see there are quite a few threads already on oils but I am trying to determine what the VW oils standard is. I am going to carry out my own oil change in the near future. I see that Fuchs TITAN GT1 LONGLIFE III 5W-30 is VW507 approved. Fuchs has a SAE 5W-30 viscosity, therefore does that imply I can use any oil as long as it is SAE 5W-30 viscosity?

Also what is the difference between VW505 01 and VW507? I think VW507 is for long life service and VW505 01 is for time/distance, is this correct?

Thanks for any help offered.

Hi Alan,

VW505.01 and VW507 are the recommended oils for PD Diesel engines.

As you suggested VW 505.01 is suitable for time and distance servicing (max 12 months, 10,000 miles).

VW 507 is suitable for Long life servicing and due to its lower ash content, it is also intended for cars with DPFs (http://www.theaa.com/motoring_advice/fuels-and-environment/diesel-particulate-filters.html). Since the VW 507 is a higher quality oil than the VW 501, it can also be used for time and distance servicing.

Conversely, VW 505.01 should not be used for Long life servicing !

Since the PD engines wear/load the oil much more heavily than a normal (non PD formulated oil), it is essential that the correct VW oil specification (e.g. VW505.01, VW507 ...) is used, rather than purely the oil viscosity,

Hence, using an oil with the correct viscosity that doesn't conform to the correct VW specifications, may result in accelerated oil wear and consequent longer term camshaft damage.

What are the best non VW oils to use for a regular 10k service plan,

And what needs to be done at 50k service while leaving out the belt and tensioner for now.

a list would be much appreciated

Air and fuel filters imo.

A few manaufacturers do right specs of oil Castrol Edge, Quantum (i use longlife III same as most dealers), Carlube, even Halfords do them.

Decided to use above for a change to suit both cars & great price
Previously happy with Millers XFE-PD 505.01 on Alhambra & Passat

Just been to Tesco and saw 1L of Castrol Edge 5W/30 on offer at £9.13 - a saving of over £4 and ideal for keeping in the back of the car.
