have you checked the wiring to the brake light and switch and also the fuse?

Not checked wiring but refitted old switch and only the high light comes on all the time, both other bulbs are OK

it would seem to me that you have damaged the new switch whilst fitting it,
don't feel bad about that, aparrently it's easily done, you need to keep the pedal up whilst fitting new switch rather than down,( or something like that).
i would advise another new switch, and a search,on this forum, for the correct way to fit it,
good luck,
stewy.

Thanks for the reply, I read up on fitting the switch before fitting, I remember a couple of years ago fitting a switch to a Lupo and having to go through a sequence of ignition on and off somehow to get it to work, but I cannot find any reference to that now

Check out this thread - specifically page 8. I done mine last week. The new switch looks like the top one in the picture near the bottom of page 8.

Install by NOT pressing down on any pedals.
Push the lugs of the new switch into place and firmly hold there while twisting approx 35 degrees so that the plug connector ends up vertical and at the side closest to the brake/accelerator pedals. It should 'click' when fully rotated.

Do the above with no key in the ignition. All shoud be well when restarting.

I was a jammy sod and managed mine first time BUT many don't including the dealers!

Good luck!

Now sorted thanks, took the switch apart to check if I had broken it, but hadn't, then seen how it works, and as cazyp says it needs to be fitted with the peddle fully up not down as several links on how to fit says!!
