View Full Version : DRLs, is this setup possible?

I'm looking to get my lights up as DRLs. I'm trying to find out what is actually possible. I'll either be using my uncles vagcom or buying it myself.

I want to have my tail lights and number plate lights on all the time.
I'd like to have my HID headlights on all the time as well.
So far I don't think that's to bad! But here comes the complicated bit...
I'd like to make my side light bulbs my indicators, and have the current indicators made into DRLs. I would change the sidelights bulbs to orange bulbs, and change the indicator bulbs to White bulbs.

Is this possible through vagcom, or would I need to do a bit of rewiring?

This is from memory so I might be wrong but as far as I can remember, you can set the indicators to come on with drls but not the sidelights to act as indicators, also i remember reading that some guy melted his indicator bulb holders after setting them as drls without dimming them down, there is a percentage setting for dimming whichever bulb you choose as the drl in vagcom as well, so you would need to do that. BUT I think you are going to have to rewire them anyway. This leads to the question 'is there a dimmer function for the sidelights in vagcom', because if there isn't and you rewire the indicators as sidelights, you're gonna melt the bulb holders. Unfortunately I think the answer to that question is no too :(

Somewhere on the net there's a full map of all the vagcom settings on the b6 which should provide definitive answers to your questions but I can't seem to find it now... the links on the rosstech wiki site are dead...

 :D

So, next time i take the passat to VW, can i just ask to have their system recode to have just the front sides on ?!?!

Just find that the odd lorry on the M25 every day takes a bit more notice when the sides are (not bothered about the back).

Not likely! But if you can find a friendly forum member with vagcom they will be able to (I think) - have a look in the vagcom section, there are lots of people happy to help

If the indicators are set as DRLs, will they still flash when the indicator is turned on? I'm just looking to do something different with the lights. Somethin that looks OEM without fitting bright LED strips!

if you just set the indicators as the drls then i think the answer is yes, they light up dimmer than usual all the time then flash at normal brightness when indicating. but if you also set 'front parking light as side turn signal' then i don't think they would do that any more - i think that if you set all of long coding byte 0 bit 4, byte 7 and byte 14, then set the dimming in byte 20 to a reasonable value, you might get exactly what you're after

i failed to mention, and this is important - if you set us drls make sure that when you test your settings you take the handbrake off! because us drls only come on when the handbrake is released! even though i was already aware of that to start with when i set them on my car i was still stumped as to why they weren't working for a good few minutes.

agree with your opinion on the leds by the way. i was just thinking what i think would look best and i reckon having the sides and indicators lit up all the time without the dipped bulbs, then the indicators blinking brighter than usual when indicating would look good.

If you hang fire, Im in the stage of developing DRL's myself and they will be L.E.D's. :D

There will be a strip of L.E.D.'s in the front indicator housing for D.R.L's and a strip of L.E.D indicators in the housing. Watch this space!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D:D. Bascically it will look like original equipment. And very good :beerchug:

I think G -black was referring to stick on strips. Mine will be fitted inside the indicator housing and look original.

So long as I doesn't look a cheap add on. The idicator housing isn't clear and looks a bit frosted so if it's hidden behind them it could be ok?! The only thing with what your talkin about doing is the brightness of them compaired to the indicator. On the audis, the DRL dims to 50% when the indicator comes on so it can be clearly seen during the day...

I wasn't happy with it though and will try again sometime with LEDs as well.

It's easy to do with a Dremel.

Did you manage to do this? Agree that this would be a sleek option, without having to fiddle about with LEDs, 470 Ohm
ballasts, etc. And then being disappointed with result. If so, what VCDS coding did you end up with?

Cheers

I am looking for some DRLs which fit into the existing indicators, and which double up as indicators too!

I found some on eBay that did just this (Multiple Flash DRL 2x 9 LED White & Yellow Waterproof Car Daytime Running light) which are superb, but the curvature of the lights are not as much as are needed in the Passat (probably OK on an Audi).

Still looking for the ideal solution!

This (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/321030503176?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1438.l2649) is the kit all of us Passat B6 owners have been waiting for......

It appears to be the ideal solution in that they replace the existing indicator lights with dual LEDs, one set for DRLs and one set for indicators, so no hole drilling etc..

It would also appear that the DRLs can be connected directly to the electronic handbrake switch somehow, so that they only come on when the electronic handbrake is off, so they only light up when the car is moving, or stationery without the handbrake being applied. From what I can read this was the original intention for DRLs to only be lit when the car was moving, or near to moving, hence Daylight Running Lights!!

My personal take on these are that they are too expensive for the European market, not many people will pay £143 for the kit and then an additional £25 for postage from China!!

Having bought them they then have to be fitted - not rocket science but an extra hassle! I have contacted the supplier and asked whether these DRLs switch off when head lights are turned on in accordance with the law, but no reply yet!!

Has anybody on the Forum bought them yet, and do they do what it says on the tin??

Sounds as though they might be an ideal product for a Forum bulk buy!! Any takers?

A link would be useful. If they're behind the same lens as the indicators, would they be so bright that they would prevent the indicators from being effective?

A lot of the latest DRLs, in strips, on some modern cars (Audi, Citroen etc) are way too bright, to the extent that they almost dazzle. Too much bling.

The link was under This, but here it is again.....
LED Daytime running lights Lamp DRL for VW PASSAT B6 Turn Signal 08-10 1:1 | eBay (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/LED-Daytime-running-lights-Lamp-DRL-VW-PASSAT-B6-Turn-Signal-08-10-1-1-/321030503176?_trksid=p5197.m1992&_trkparms=aid%3D111000%26algo%3DREC.CURRENT%26ao%3 D1%26asc%3D14%26meid%3D4684878405780159595%26pid%3 D100015%26prg%3D1006%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D321030503176% 26)

The DRLs actually alternate with the indicators when the indicators are on like some Audis and Jaguars, so when indicators are on the DRLs are off.

Don't think this is too much bling, just the way to go.

My apologies. Didn't notice the change in colour :Blush2:

The reference to bling was some of the foot-long strips. OTT imo.

They look the business, but I do wonder if they'd be legal in the UK (and France) in the same lens?

Not being picky, but £25 postage is way too much, so for about £145....?

Best wishes

Have been offered a 30% discount on product (but no discount on shipping). Still think this is too expensive and told them so!

Still looking for right product - at right price!

Was this per pair of units to you or for a group buy?

Have had no reply from 4allcarproductsplaza re my previous queries, but particularly whether they're CANbus friendly. Wouldn't want to go chasing dashboard lights like I've occasionally already got with LED sidelights that are advertised by Autobulbs Direct as "CANbus friendly" That should read "usually CANbus friendly":fing02:

Yes, this was for a group buy (50 pairs). Somehow think that is out of the question for most B6 owners, especially as we do not know as to whether they will give a bulb out warning for the indicators!!

I would want my lights fully fitted and functioning for this price!!
