Hi,
I was driving my car today (Passat Estate, 57 plate, 2.0 Tdi 140) when it suddently cut out, thus I came to a complete standstill. As soon as it did it, it bleeped and stated "Engine Error - Garage" with a big exclamation mark!
I immediately tried to restart, but to no avail, it just kept turning over. I tried a minute later, it started althought the exclamation mark was still showing.
My big concern was it would happen again in a more dangerous place or I'd do damage to the engine, thus I called VM assistance. A standard RAC van turned up, car started fine and no exclamation mark. Took it for a short drive with no problems.
He connected his laptop, it detailed a 4160 error code, but the RAC guy didn't know what this meant. Thus, he suggested I take it to the dealer as their diagnostics should confirm.
I just wondered if anyone had any ideas? Thanks.

Hi,
An update on the below. Got in the car this morning to take it to the dealer to run diagnostics. It wouldn't start, the engine just turned over and after about 10 seconds it stated "Oil Pressure, Engine Off, Stop".
Sounded serious to me so did as instructed. Called VM Assistance who suggested it be towed, RAC turned up car starts fine! Drove it to the dealer no problem, all very odd...
Any ideas suggestions welcome. Thanks.

Do not drive car any further. Mine cut out in the fast lane!
Mine was the injector but I never got the fault code for it. It would tick over but no diesel was getting to the engine for it to start. If it's an injector then I hate to tell you but you are in for a big bill. However, it could also be the fuel pump. Check your car has had the recall done.

Hi,
Looking at previous threads I had a feeling it might be one of these two issues.
It's a 57 plate, I thought the fuel pump issue affected earlier carsor am I wrong? It's had 3 services, so if a recall was due you'd hope it was completed during one of these.
Was your car under warranty when the injector went? Mine's under warranty so assuming it's covered. Is it likely that once one's gone the others could follow (I'm completely non technical!)?
Thanks.

Mine wasn't under warranty. Mine is a 06 plate with 130k. I researched and found it seemed to be the cold weather. The majority of times it had happened was during cold weather or in place where it's always cold like Poland, Iceland etc...
It should be in your service book of the recall had been done. Not sure what age of car it affects but I know mine had been done.
I'm not sure if it effects the other injectors or not. I'm not very technical either!

Had something simular 3 weeks ago 57 plate 2.0 tdi dsg with 78000 miles car just stopped came up with engine fault and the exclamation mark
got it towed in and apparently injector 3 faulty and unfortunately was 20 days out of warranty initial bill £851.59 after a few phone calls to VW customer service managed
to get a decent chunk of goodwill gesture revised bill £300.02

Hi,
That's typical timing, I guess the reduced bill is a little easier to swallow, but still a bill you don't expect for the age of car and build quality you expect of a VW.
I've just had a phone call from the dealer, it is an injector, thankfully covered via warranty, I guess I'm the lucky one (this time...).
Being the eternal pessimist, my worry is if further injectors will fail (I believe there are 4 in total). The dealer told me they are independant, but it still doesn't reassure you..

Same as you i'm worried about the other 3 (especially with the cost involved) I use mine as a taxi and know of a firm with a couple and apparently just had all 4 go in the space of a month on one of their cars however it had done over 250k (which has made me feel a whole lot better)

I was worried about the other 3 going as well. But at the end of the day, I bought a car with big miles knowning that depreciation wouldn't matter to much but the risk of big repare bills might.
You were lucky you could still get the work done under warranty! My bill plus service, front pads and a door rebuild to fix the dodgy outside lock was £1200!
