hello all,

cam belt snapped and we've done all the nesasary, new valves, cam followers, head skim. we have locked the cam shaft on the rear slot, we have locked the injector pump using an improvised locator.
How do we accurately achieve tdc on the main crack pulley. We have got the front piston basically in position with a screwdriver from the top but we can't see any marks on the flywheel through the viewing hole underneath?

Been reading and some say there is a make on the crank pulley itself but we can't see that either.

I believe the engine is afn. 110bhp 1.9tdi, very early b5 non pd

help please:confused:

Hi
There should be a 0 on the flywheel that you can see in the hole in the bell housing.

thanks for your reply, they're are two half moon shape inspection holes in the bell housing 1 is at the lowest point and 2 is about 1/4 way round towards passenger side, we can't see this in either hole! Nor is there any pointer cast into the hole to make it any use!
any other ideas?

Hi
There is no pointer you just line the 0 up with the side of the case.
It should be the higher hole on the passanger side
If you pm me your email i can send you the details.
A pic might be more use to you.

Dave

thanks for the mail, very useful.

I'm still at a loss to where the flywheel position is and also the entrance to it is not the same as shown??

on page 3 in box A it shows the bellhousing viewing hole?
Mine does not look like these!

did it all sounded perfect.....ran it one more time just before we put the front end back on and it ticked and started to run lump, clicked again few mins later.... ran good. clicked again ran bad.
turned off
tried to start and just locked up completely, timing belt looks like its all in position for tdc so......?

valve dropped! we think/hope or its another 400 quid plus for the head rebuilt!
question... how easy should the cam followers drop into there holes?
it was extremely tight, guess it should be? once in they did slide down quite easys

1 valve bent! not to bad...
lesson learned make sure you do the cam sprocket up really tight and degrease!
