Hi this is my first post.
Now i don't know if i'm being paranoid or not as i had to get the DMF & clutch replaced under warranty on my last car (vectra cdti 150) after 40,000 miles and the car was only 2 & a half years old.
Anyway since December i've noticed i have to let the clutch pedal out further to catch the biting point. At first i'd say the pedal had to be let out about half way before biting point was found now the pedal feels as if it's 3/4 of the way out before the biting point is found.
My Passats an 07 plate 4motion with 24,500 miles on the clock.

Also am i right in thinking that although all VW cars come with a 2 year manufacturers warranty as i bought the car second hand from a VW dealership its covered for another 2 years after the balance of the manufacturers warranty has expired?
I'm going to book the car into the dealers this week to see what they reckon.
On my vectra you could hear the DMF rattle when the clutch pedal was pressed half way down to the floor my Passat isn't doing this either the only problem is with the clutch pedal i've also found the gear box to be "notchy" in the cold weather but just put it down to the extremely cold weather that we'd had.
Anybody got any ideas or opinions?

hi ross

your cars main warranty will run out this year.then it will have the remainder of vw all component warranty left on it (what month did you buy the car)?,if you read through it im sure it states clutches are not covered:zx11: but if i was you get it done/looked at while you have the remainder of the main warranty left.as for your gear changes been notchy 1st thing im sure its normal,my old 2001 passat done it,as does my 06 jetta does now.

It is self adjusting, no manual adjustment is possible and yes, they are rubbish and I have seen them fail in 5K miles.

If the warranty doesn't cover the clutch how much am i looking at?

For genuine parts and dealer labour with a DMF and clutch, I would say about £1500.

After the two year manufacturer's warranty you should be covered by a dealer's warranty for another year, or 60,000 miles, so for you the mileage is irrelevant.

Normal wear and tear on a clutch won't be covered, but if it's due to a manufacturing defect then it should be, and I think the DMF may fall into the latter category.

However, although dealers seem to bend over backwards to do work under the manufacturer's warranty - because they make money out of such work - they may be less enthusiastic under the dealer warranty, because it costs them money, so be prepared for them being more likely to try to blame it on you rather than a manufacturing defect.

I'll just need to hope i'm being paranoid about the clutch. Fingers crossed.

Had a second opinion from the father in law - he's had VW's all his days he says the clutch feels fine. He said it feels the same as the clutch on his 58 plate Golf 2.0TDI.

Just to update this.

I had the car in for a service this morning & told the dealership that i'm getting a shudder from the clutch 1st thing in the morning when the cars cold after sitting all night. It only happens when i reverse out the drive & put the car into 1st & let the clutch out (although it also did it the other morning when i pulled away from the shop after getting my papers on my way to work).
The garage said they couldn't find anything obvious wrong but they'd like the car in for a couple of days to strip the gearbox out to check the flywheel as my warranty expires in June this year. They're going to phone me on monday to arrange when they can supply me with a courtesy car so they can look into it.

Is this normal service or do they suspect what i suspect?

As per my reply in your other post - DMF (plus clutch plate and release bearing)

I just phoned the garage to see whats happening they told me over the phone that "there is wear but its within the tolerence levels" and that "they'll explain it & go through the paper work with me when i come down to collect the car".

So basically there's wear but they won't replace anything so 6 months or 2 years down the line the clutch could need replaced - when the cars out of warranty!

What a load of 80110<k5, how can they asses the wear without removing the clutch! They are just hoping it will last long enough to be out of warranty.

Just back from garage. I'll need to be quick i'm niteshift tonite.
The service manager said "It's a characteristic of the vehicle that VW know about. I would love to replace the clutch & fly wheel as i can charge VW 4 hours labour & the price of the clutch & flywheel but this might not cure it."
I told him that the thing thats bothering me is that my warranties up at the end of May & i could end up getting a large bill to replace the clutch. He told me that "VW customer care might help me out if this was the case as it's registered on the system that the car was in to get this problem investigated"

I'm going to email VW customer care to see what they say.
