Hi,

I recently changed my brakes and must have used too much torque on the passenger side (near side?) lower calliper bolt, it's just turning and turning, never locks. I tried swapping the bolts around, but it seems it's the bit the bolt screws into which has threaded/gone...

I spoke to my local garage and they suggested that I replace the hub.. is this correct? They said it was a fairly quick and easy job, I'm just wondering what exactly I would search for on ebay, or if this is something I should buy new?

From what I can gather it should be the carrier HUB which needs replaced:-

Also how would I find my engine code on my 1.9 TDI?

Would really appreciate some help on this one so I can order the right part.. it's a 2000 (W) plate Golf 1.9 TDI 90hp..

Thanks,

Chris.

This is a common problem. The M9 thread in the carrier has stripped so you will have to replace the complete hub carrier or have a thread insert fitted but M9 is an odd size. I have a special repair set for this. Which requires a jig to ensure alignment. I have even had to go to my local VW delaer to get them out of a mess with this problem. I would post a picture but Photobucket is playing up-again!

Cheers for that, what do you think is the fastest/cheapest option here.. the repair kit or replacing the hub carrier?

I'm no mechanic but would putting it on a jig require taking it off anyway?

If you can find someone with the tool or with an M9 helicoil kit, have it inserted. Second hand hub carrier may have a faulty wheel bearing, warped hub or faulty ABS sensor and new parts are very expensive.
