i have a passat awx pd 130 with 120.000 on and when started cold it is quite rattely from the top end i have checked the cam and there is no ware on it it has always had the proper oil in (castrol edge) But after driving for 5 mile the engine warms up and the noise goes away
the injecters can be adjusetd do thease ever need to be done (could this cause the noise and if so how are they adjuseted)

mine used to be like that it was smokey as well i had 4 dead glow plugs now all is well again funny thing is it always started first time!

i changed all 4 about a yr ago
I think the rattley noise is normal for diesel when its cold. Its like that on mine too but car goes fine.
As for the injectors; you can take them out easily enough, but they have to be cleaned and the nozzle adjusted by specialists. I think this is a job to be done around 120-150,000 miles.

Your rattle is probably the time it takes for the tappets to settle having drained of oil while standing. Injectors are not adjustable as such, adjustment is for the initial set up. PD injectors are not simple things to take out, clean, replace and set up. Not without some skill.
