Yikes ... as stupid as it sounds, I don't know if my car has a car alarm or not? When I bought it a week ago, it came with two keys, both of which are pretty much the same. They operate the doors/boot/ignition okay. I notice on the door, along the top edge where the plastic trim stops and the glass starts, there's a popper that pops up when the doors are unlocked and pops down when they're locked. Right next to it is what seems to be a small LED which I assume is some kind of alarm system indicator. I do not have any keyfobs though. So I guess my questions are:
1. How do I know if I've got an alarm on my S/99 Passat B5 1.8 ?
2. How do I get a keyfob for it, if I do indeed have one ?
And yes, before you ask, I do feel a right plonker even having to ask :Blush2:

Are you saying that you've not got remote central locking, and just the plain keys without any buttons on them?
As for the alarm, look under the bonnet next to the battery, the alarm sounder is located between the battery and the nearside wing.
Do a search for keys if you want RCL.
You may have to check the codes on the sticker in the spare wheel well to see if it was fitted or not.
Paste them here (http://igorweb.org/equidec/Default.aspx) to see.

You see, that's a gem of info, so I'll check it out tonight and come back tomorrow with what it says! Cheers again Hex69:o
Despite the fact you don't have a fob, when you lock the doors with the key you are still activating the alarm and deadlock (hence the red light flashing)
The fob is just a lazy way of locking and unlocking the car.

I'd agree if the LED flashed but it doesn't.:(
Ahh ok, i'm with you now.
As far as I am aware, the light indicates the car is deadlocked. If it isn't flashing, then you have locked and alarmed it but not deadlocked the car. Someone correct me if this is incorrect, but you need to turn the key twice in the door when locking in order to lock, alarm and deadlock the car.

Would you credit it ... I locked it "twice" with the key and lo and behold ... the LED flashes! Presumably it's now alarmed? Smooooth ... Nice one, thanks :biglaugh:
Yup, now alarmed and deadlocked.
You're welcome.

http://www.windowsguide.org/forum/images/smilies/hmmm.gif Mine is 2003 130 petrol, now I have locked the car with the key occasionally as on mine if you hold the key in the 'lock' position it winds up any open windows. The LED still flashes.
Maybe later models differ. I normally use the button on the keyfob but am not aware the car has deadlocks.

It has Malc, all B5 Passats were thus equipped, however some did not come with alarm, hence the reason I said to look under the bonnet for the sounder.
