Golf Mk IV Tailgate Stuck

The tailgate on my Golf won't open anymore. I've read a few other posts on here with the same issue so I've already done some investigating. I have removed the plastic trim inside the boot so I can get to the lock and I can see no water staining. The central locking mechanism works fine, but when the tailgate release is pulled, the lock does not dis-engage. I can see that the mechanism to release the lock is working OK, but nothing happens - could this be an electrical issue ? Thanks

I had the same problem recently. The solenoid was firing but the mechanism wasn't resetting properly. There was no sign of water damage.

I gave it a squirt of WD40 which helped then opearted the system manually while packing the moving parts with copperslip. It's been fine since.
