After having my battery disconnected for a few days on my V5 the radio has lost its code.
Now i've read that golf mk4's should remember there codes automatically, but its been 2 days anyway to get it to re-learn without going to the dealers.
I did ring vw up and they told me that i needed to book my car in with the service team, but if i do that im surely looking at 1 hours labour, would it be cheaper to buy a new one with a code with it?

No need to book in with dealer. I had to get a code for a Gamma I bought off fleaBay and it was as simple as calling up the Service dept, giving them the serial number of the radio & reg of car (not too sure why, as it would be different to the one where the radio came from originally).

They have to get the code from Milton Keynes, but within an hour they called back. Job done.

The dealer is having you on mate.

Hmmm, maybe that's one way, but I think they're talking rubbish. I assume you've checked the car's user manual - the booklet for the radio will have the code written in it, if it's the radio that came with the car, that is.

i've had someone put it on there diagnostics and it came up with 2 codes. one was called coding 01403 and oone radio 0001 , any of these have anything to do with it?

The code you need is 4 digits. You could try 0001, but it seems unlikely that it'd be that.

If it's any help I found it depends on the dealer. VW in Letchworth were adamant I had to bring the car and my V5 log book in and it would cost £12 + vat to get a code.
VW Heathrow did it for free over the phone. I just had to give my car reg and the serial No of the head unit.
