smoking 3.0 petrol

a mate of mine has an 04 3.0 petrol cab.
it has started to smoke alot when started cold, he says it clears pretty quickly though.
do these engines have any common problems that may cause this?
older vauxhalls were forever having valve stem oil seals going, could it be something like that?
the oil has been changed, which helped for a while, it doesn't seem to breathe too heavily through oil filler.

Howe many miles does he drive a day?

Are you sure its just not condensation in the exhaust at this time of year..

for example.... mine does it pretty bad at the moment as i only do around 5 miles in the A4 each day..

he lives in central london, so lots of short trips, but he is sure it is smoking not condensation.
the car has only done 80k
