Right here's one for you all,we all know how the rubber trims on the bottom edge of the door starts pickling up and lifting away after a few years on the 80 coupe. My one is a 95 2.6 model and they are on their way but I'm wonderring if any of you have ever just removed the trims and filled/painted the doors.
If so ,what does it look like ,.....any pictures?...... if it's a cack idea can new rubbers still be bought and if so at what cost?
Thanks gang

You know what, I think I have a couple of those on the shelf at work off an 1989, Audi 90 saloon, remind me to have a look tomorrow. They were a cancelled order from years back, the bloke ordered them and then sold the car.

Steve would the '89 90 saloon rubbers fit the 2 door '95 coupe?

Yup - I've always fancied doing this on the Coupes I've owned - then you can colour code the front/rear bumpers too. Never seen the finished job though... I have looked at body kits, but to be honest they are "all or nothing", and a bit nasty looking, in my opinion. 80 Coupes are hard to get some refined styling for, hey? :)

I 100% agree ,the kits you see are usually so tacky they would only really suit a jap,and I think the Audi is far too classy for that.
Any body know if the strips are available?

I wonder if its possible to take a mold from the current strips and have them manufactured in fibreglass?
i.e. something that can then be sprayed?

Hiya
Im new to Audi Coupe ownership and love my car. My door trim is peeling away on the drivers side and is letting the looks down :-. Can these rubber trims be bought and simply replaced?
Cheers

In the US, Audi OEM lower door trim is available. I've found the best prices at 'genuineaudiparts.com'. They are a VW/Audi dealer in San Diego, California. Price is $49.32 for each piece plus $2.82 for each end cap. No idea what the shipping might be to the UK though.
Here's the Web page:

I'd be interested to hear about this too. What I wonder though, is that if you buy replacement strips - how do these actually attach. On mine, where there is a little bit of flex on the ends where they have started to go, you can see the metal clips - looks like these corrode - but has anyone actually every taken these off/replaced them? Any advice/pictures available?

The strips slide onto plastic clips that are attached to metal studs on the door. The rubber strip has a metal U-shaped channel molded into it. It's that metal channel in the rubber that corrodes. Over time, salt and debris work their way under the rubber at the ends and eat away at the metal. The metal eventually just crumbles.
The strips remove quite easily and don't usually damage the mounting clips. Just open the door and pull lengthwise on the outer end of the strip. It should slide off. I suppose spraying behind the rubber first with WD-40 or the like might help.
To install a new strip, clean the door bottom well and lubricate the channel in the rubber strip. I use a product called LPS3 Corrosion Inhibitor. Dries to a waxy material and displaces water, etc. Push the strip over the clips and slide it along toward the front of the door. There's a small rubber cap that is placed into the forward end of the strip channel. It has metal teeth that lock it in place to secure the strip.
I'm waiting for an answer from genuinevwaudiparts.com about their abillity to ship internationally. Will advise.
Bob.

BTW: Here's the part numbers from vagcat.com. It might be worthwhile to check online sites in the UK and Europe that sell Audi parts. The shipping will be a lot less. It shouldn't be necessary to buy the clips unless some break while removing the strip. The end caps must be replaced.

Still no response. Just sent another query about availability of international shipping.
genuinevwaudiparts.com is just a VW/Audi dealership that happens to run an online parts sales operation. Perhaps there's a silimilar dealer in the UK or Europe?
For reference, here's a couple of other Audi parts dealers in the US:
http://www.trademotion.com/partlocator/index.cfm?siteid=215021 New Jersey
http://www.primepartssuperstore.com/partlocator/ Massachusetts
I have purchased from all of them. they are reliable. Pricing varies a bit with genuinevwaudiparts.com having the best prices.

Hello Stu - I reckon you can get solid replacements for these - I've seen a few German tuned Audi coupes online and they appear to have solid, colour coded panels. I just need to find a decent enough close up image to see if they are just sprayed (i.e. sprayed the original with some flex paint stuff) or whether they are a full replacement...

Hi there I managed to get 2 new lower door rubbers for my 94 audi cabriolet 2.3e for thirty quid a piece at euro car parts although since recently going through their parts list they do not seem to stock them anymore, i must admit it really tidies up the cars look. hope this was helpful

Just replaced them on my 94 2.6 - they cost me £82 the pair inc end caps from the local dealer - but the car looks better for it
And got knocked off my bike on the way home from the dealer for my troubles, shoulder damage, concussion and a bent derraileur for trying to do my bit

I think we still have them, only for one side though. I am off for two days next week so call John or Roy on 01159875740 and ask them about the trims we had on the shelf for a customer called Albert who had a type 89 90 saloon. If they are unsure what you mean they can call me and I will explain.
