Hi,
We currently have a Touareg or more accurately a Polo 1.2 courtesy car whilst our Touareg is having its 2nd £1900 repair done in 3 weeks!! - Don't ask, its been a nightmare. and we want shot of it.
The dealer has a B6 2.0 TDI CR 140 Sport DSG 2008 23400 miles
Here's the link:
http://www.agnewcars.com/details.asp?CarID=11311&Make=36&Model=&Engine=&Location=&Fuel=&GearBox=2&Body=&min_pr=&max_pr=&min_monthly=&max_monthly=&Year=&SortOrder=priceasc&offset=0
As you can see they're looking £14495 for it, having looked at a couple of posts here on the forum the price seems high.
We have £1000 shortfall between the outstanding and the value of the Touareg which they're going to add to the price of the B6 bringing it up to £15495.
What do you think is a reasonable figure for the above car?
If I'm going to negotiate (which I'm not good at:() what what do you think I should ask for? bearing in mind the crap we've been put through with the Touareg.
Thanks in advance,
Paul

Having been in a place where I wanted shut of the car by any means possible, I feel for you - the price does seem steep though.
What you might want to consider is either getting your Touareg repaired and part-exing it elsewhere (where they won't be as familiar with the vehicle), or if you have to buy it there - do some research for other Passats with similar spec/price and use that as a bargaining chip.
A reasonable price for that car is that which you are willing to pay - Me, I'm crap at negotiating and only got a stunning px price for my (hated) Leon and good price for the Passat because the salesman was the OH's stepbrother.
Good luck.

Price is going to depend to a degree on when in 2008 the car was registered. It looks from the web-site that this is a Northern Ireland car supermarket job rather than being a full blown VW dealer with all the usual higher prices for used stock. This car isn't discoverable on the VW dealer website, hence why I think its a supermarket operation.
There was a thread running on here for some time about ex-hire cars that dealers were knocking out as "ex-VW lease vehicles". Lots of unhappy people. This car is an ideal candidate, standard trim, highish miles for a young age. You need to check. On the mainland there were a number of registration numbers that were indicative, but I see from the photos the car is on NI plates.
My advice is fourfold:
1. Get a free Glass's valuation for your old car (see the Vauxhall website, on the finance page).
2. Shop around. There are plenty of cars out there.
3. If you are still keen on this car make them an offer and stick to it or walk away. It only counts as negotiation if you are flexible, don't be. Relax, it's easy. Remember, the dealer is not your friend, he is just an estate agent with all the humanity surgically removed.
4. Insist on a written guarantee that it isn't an ex-hire car. Don't be fobbed off.
Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, it is a VW dealer, I linked to the Agnews master site because the VW site doesn't allow individual page linking.
The car is on the VW master site but as some cars are listed as Auto and others as DSG even if both have DSG boxes you can easy miss some of them.
I'm going to see the car this lunch time, I'll let you know how it goes.
Thanks for the Glass's link, it appears that the valuation for our Touareg is about right for its condition.
Thanks again

What sort of repairs are you talking about? Is it accidental damage or faults with the vehicle? If its faults with the vehicle then really you shouldnt have to bear the brunt of it. Regardless, the price seems steep. I bought my Passat 170tdi sport estate with the manual gear box a year past in Oct, at that time it was exactly 1 year old with 10,600 miles and paid a lot less than that.

The Touareg:
Got it Dec 2006 (3 years ago) with 36,000 on the clock and 3 years old
We've done 30,000 since then and so far:
1 propshaft bearing at £1800(+VW/Dealer picking up 30%)
1 ABS Pump 2 weeks before this Xmas £1800
and now only 40ish miles later
Camshaft and Tappets £1970(+VW/Dealer picking up 20%)
Additionally its ate a window regulator £130 and a wing mirror (oppps) at £100
I wont go into my opinion of VW Customer services Luxury Department
{Insert multiple swear words here}
We've just totally lost confidence in it and therfore want something else. The problem here in NI is that Auto's ain't all that popular and with only a few dealers its not that easy to go from one to the other.
Because the ABS pump and the camshaft repairs; we're completely tapped out therefore if we go anywhere else we're going to have to find the £1000 in cash to cover the shortfall in the Touareg.
We can always just take the Touareg but the finance deal is up in June so we'd only be putting off the inevitable for a couple of months and the dealer would have forgotten about us and any goodwill they feel for us now.
Another potential option is if the Customer Service Mgr has a word with one of his opposites at another franchise in the Agnews group, if the Passat doesn't work out I'll speak to him about it.
Thanks
Paul

That sounds like a problem car to be honest. I wouldnt accept that. Id be writing to the very top at VW and if no satisfaction was forthcoming, id threaten to go to the press. Dont think its underhand, just means you may get proper service. Happended to my dad when he bought an ex demo honda pan european which was a dangerous lemon and he ended up getting a brand new top of the range one.

Well, I've just been on a test drive and, yes, its very nice, it'll do!
Everything checks out, its never been a hire car, it had a full service in December, the tyres are all good and it still has 18 months Mfg warranty.
They're going to email me some figures this afternoon and depending upon SHMBO we'll make a decision tonight.
I told him the only missing thing from our point of view was parking sensors, If we go for it, he'll get them fitted.
I'll let you know.....

Sounds good. Just be absolutely sure of the previous owners. Some hire companies set up other companies as their 'suppliers' so that doesnt appear as a hire car. Doesn't mean you will get a bad car though.

I would've thought with the substantial sum you have paid on an unreasonable amount of repairs, that as gesture of goodwill, they should offer you a very humble and generous discount - or an exceptional trade-in figure.
If you like the car, and it seems good , go for it - you surely cannot have a repeat experience as bad as the Tou(rage) :D
I'd ask for a full service, also DSG's need a special oil change at 40k.
Hope they come up good!

Thank you all for the advice, we went for the car and are currently waiting the the sweaty finance stuff to be processed. :boggled:
With luck we'll be able to get the car on Monday.
Your help was invaluable, I was able to ask a lot of questions that either would not have dawned on me or would have done so too late.
In the meantime I supose I'll have to sully my Mac with some of those insurance comparison sites.
I'll let you know how it goes on Monday.

Had similar circumstances with my car. Had a 58 A4 Sline (on PCP)and was made redundant. I got a new job after 3 months with same salary but no car allowance this time. I went to VW and swapped for a 58 Passat SEL 170, and had a shortfall of £1500. Ended up agreeing on £750 and they chucked in mats/full tank/2 years servicing/3 year warranty and 12 month tax.
Overall better as I will pay £200 a month less for the finance.

Hi again,
Went and signed a good part of my life away at lunch time, will be picking up the Passat tomorrow.:D
You can't even guess as how relieved we are to be seeing the back of the Touareg.
I'll keep you posted on how it goes.

Yep, got it today and although all I've done is drive it home I must say I'm impressed.
First Impressions:
Compared to the Touareg (Off to hell with ya) the pickup when you plant the throttle is very nice.
The DSG box seems to be a bit sensitive changing between 1st to 2nd and visa versa. On the 'T' I could 'reset' the gearbox by turning the key but not starting the engine and holding down the throttle for 10sec+, Can I do something similar with this one?
The seats are very comfy.
I'm a bit concerned that I cant see the bonnet at all from the drivers seat and I'm 6'1", parking could be fun!
Big boot, and compared to the 'T' the seats are a dream to fold down, in the 'T' you had to remove all the headrests, fold up the squab and only then could you fold the backs down.
The curry hook in the boot is a good idea.
What oil should I use its the 2.0 TDI common rail? Its a 2008, if I'm right its 5W-30 but I'm not sure. I like to carry a litre around in the boot.
I'll post an update and I'm sure a bunch of questions when I've put some more miles under it, in the mean time what do you suggest as an initial 'cheap' thing I can do/add to make it ours, AND I'M NOT TALKING FURRY DICE!!:D
Thanks again for all your help

Glad you like it.
I got the windows tinted which I think suits the Passat well.
I'm planning a chrome grill as has been done by others on this forum, that can be cheap to do!
