I can't decide which engine to choose for a new A4. 1.8TFSI petrol or 2.0TDI diesel? Which one is more reliable and has lower maintenance costs?

I have the 1.8TFSI A4 Avant and what I would say that if you are a spirited driver with a heavy right foot, then prepare to be amazed at how quickly that fuel gauge goes from full to empty!!! I had a Diesel 170 as a loaner and that was actually bearable (and I caned it everywhere!!) but me personally if I was to have to choose again might be tempted to the dark side (Diesel) but only as an automatic!!

You'll have to test drive them both. My last car had the previous 1.8T engine and I didn't rate it, so went for the new CR TDI, which is smooth and responsive - and the economy is too far short of the official figures either. I have had no problems with the TDI engine and the servicing so far has been per standard Audi costs.

Regardless of low or high power output, personally I would choose the respective TDI equivalent.

If it's a company car - 2.0TDIe is 13% BIK

im going to get a derv next time. Its not the extra tax that I have to pay on the 1.8T with the old engine with the higher c02 that annoys me, its the trips to the petrol station. im looking at low to id 20s on my trip to work with the stop start of the traffic on a long motorway trip i have had low 40s............but in reality its half this.

just had two new fronts after 12200 miles and my first oil change. fronts were bald on the inside and only noticed when having the oil drained up on the ramp.

Which 1.8 is it? do they still do the 120 and 160 versions?

Im looking at a 2.0 tdi A6 at the moment for a change or the A5 sportback when I can actually see the point of it

:D I have the 2.0 Tdi (170PS) and regularly get above 45 mpg when running around. Coupled with the CO2 tax advantage the difference in performance isn't enough for me, its a no brainer!!!

Sorry to say, it's diesel everytime for me - but i do 30K miles a year.. So petrol makes no sense.
My 170 horse 2.0TDi will keep up with most things once it rolling due to mid range torque...
Does 47MPG on 70 mile journey to work.
Happy punter!
