Hello.

Can anyone tell me where the clutch MASTER cylinder is located on an 2003 Mk4 TDi.

Thanks.

Its fitted on the end of the clutch pedal itself and requires clutch pedal removal.

You'll obviously need to remove the metal fluid pipe by releasing the spring clip.

Thanks for your advice.

Hi
Don't assume the master cylinder is at fault on a Golf Mk4. I currently have the same problem, be it only very occasionally, but it can be a slave cylinder/release bearing problem if it has a concentric type release bearing and a 6 speed box. What is your Golf model. If it is as above your have to take out the gearbox to change it. Expensive!!!( Up to a £1000 at an independent VW garage) as the recommmendation is to change the clutch assembly and possibly the dual mass flywheel. Before you change the master cylinder check the pedal is not broken/cracked as this can apparently cause it to stick down. Just a couple of things to check first.

Thanks warrtydog.

Today I bled out the system and got a load of 'Gunge' out, looks like water contamination as it settles below the fluid in the jar.
Pedal operation seems restored [for now anyway]. BTW The car is a 100bhp TDI.
The problem was the pedal sticking down but still driving, but only when cold??

Hi
Just a thought about your system, if it shares the fluid reservoir with the brakes it would be a very good idea to change the fluid in the brake system as well.

Cheers

Thanks. It is a 5 speed. I have fitted a new slave cylinder now just to be sure.
