Hi all!

I have been searching threads (some which are too old for me to reply to)

Since I am a NEWBIE, I can not tell the Engine or Gearbox codes? Where do I Look? How can I tell? :1zhelp:

I have the 1.6 8valve engine! (with the automatic gearbox)

I am really finding it hard to source a replacement gearbox, & then when I do, I cannot confirm the correct gearbox codes... :(

I would ideally like to replace or repair the tranny!

I understand there are a few vw/audi/seat/skoda models that can retrofit & use the same gearbox!

I have even thought about converting the car from Automatic transmission to manual gearbox? Is this Possible?

If so:

apart from the master cylinder & clutch pedal?
what else would i need to do? & what would I do with the automatic transmission ecu?

Please let me know Your help is Much appriciated!

I have been offered a decent working automatic transmission from a 2002 golf mk4, Which has the same 1600cc engine, Tried hard looking for the code, as its still plugged to the engine!

But cant tell:mad:

Nor can I tell the code on my Own audi a3!

Please advise, thanks...

In your Audi handbook/service book page 1, and in the boot of your car underneath the spare wheel there should be a sticker approximately 3" square with loads of numbers and letters on it
Just as an example this is how my Audi 80 coupe sticker reads.
Vehicle
identification number wauzzz-------------------etc

Type 8b3---144--------etc
Type description coupe v6 2.6
engine output 110kw----m5s---etc

Engine code/no ABC--------------------CPE
Gearbox code no
Colour/interior trim etc x2b b0a c4k goc hop joj
m76 q1d 1ac 1g3 1mr
bla,bla,bla etc etc

As you can see I have missed out a few letters/numbers for obvious reasons but the format is unchanged throughout the whole Audi vw range.
You can see from the above that my car is an Audi coupe with a v6 2.6 engine and 5 speed manual box and producing 110kw ( circa 150bhp)
My engine code is ABC and my gearbox code is CPE
You should be able to work out what you have when you find the stickers
Good luck

Stuart

PS I'm surprised nobody got to you sooner but I've only just spotted you

Is it possible for me to Turn my car into Manual?

If so what would I do with the autotransmission ECU?

Any ideas?

Making your car manual is possible, the engine ECU can be recoded very easily and the auto one can go on fleaBay, but it is a lot of work, even parts of the suspension can be different. Now I have your details, I will research it a bit and give you my thoughts.

You make it sound So Possible!

I must be in Luck after all these months of the car being off the road!

Its so much easier to get parts for the manual version! (& I find autos good for bigger engined cars only!)

(I have also since bought another A3 to run around in, this one is a 1.6 manual!)

But the auto's fully kitted out So nicely I cant just let it go!

Just put a Bumper onnit, Will get it sprayed ASAP!

No, this is no a good proposition.

There are a couple of water hoses to change or blank off
Clutch and flywheel
The gearbox mounts and reaction arm are different
I suspected the exhaust down pipe was different but it doesn’t appear to be
Technically speaking the front springs are stronger on an auto so the front may come up a bit
The drive shafts are different
The steering column is different
Power steering pressure hose
Obviously the complete floor shifter mechanism is different,
Cutch pedal, bracket, pipes, master cylinder, slave cylinder etc
Accelerator pedal floor stop
Brake pedal
Accelerator cable
Centre consul
Steering lock
Engine ECU (it cannot be recoded as I thought)
Starter motor
Gearbox speed sensor
Engine bay harness

The other problem of course ids finding the parts, especially thee gearbox. As the box you want is typically a DUU, these are THE most unreliable and failure prone boxes VAG have ever produced and so are in huge demand, often fetching £500 second hand. A quick Google of “VW+DUU” will put you off immediately!

The ECT was used on the 98 to 99 A3 1.6 with the AKL and AEH engine, it may work but I am not sure.

What about an FDH gearbox? been offered one from a 1.6 auto golf mk4....

Any ideas?

Crasher
06-03-2010, 09:51 PM
The FDH was used in the A3 with the 1.6 engine from 2000 to 2003 but as it uses a different valve body I suspect it may not function correctly.

also came across a DTB? are there any other applications for my DSU or DLU?

Been searching hard!

Crasher

I am only sure about the DLU being a possible alternative. The DTB was used on the 98 1.6 with the AEH engine but I am not sure it would work. I don’t have the rest of the day to work out possible alternatives; I can only tell you what VW say are the two correct boxes, DSU and DLU.

I have now found the correct info onthese AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS

audi a3 transmission code ECT

vw golf transmission code DTB

1.60 automatic transmission with these gearboxes are interchangeable as i have just fitted the dtb box to my audi a3

only difference maybe the drive shaft ends which are easy changed, mine was a simple fit

I have a similair problem with my A3 2.0TDI Auto. I think the speed sensor in the gearbox is not working. It will change up gear in auto. But if is in manual mode, is fine.

I am not sure is that the gearbox sensor or wheel sensor? Please help.

Just as an Update, I was GLAD enough to see the Back of BOTH motors, FORGET about gearboxs when it comes to golfs & audis!

IF you have a VAG car & its got a Gearbox problem, YOU GOT A PROBLEM!

Dont say I never tell you so!

I Dont mind a VAG car, BUT this time its gotta be a TDI!
