I'm currently looking to purchase either a Passat 2.0 TDI SE estate 2006/7 model or my budget will also go to a 2003/4 Audi 1.9 TDI SE estate.
Does anyone have any advise on which is the better car for long motorway driving ( I do about 26000 a year) and which would be more reliable etc.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks

The only advice is to try them both for long journeys to see which has the most comfortable seating, best economy, best performance (is the 1.9 the 105 or 130 output?), is it the facelift A4, etc, which has the better spec, etc. It's horses for courses.
I did hear that the 1.9 engine is more economical though - Also the Audi might have done more depreciating than the Passat which might be another consideration.

Thanks for that.
I should have said this is an Audi A6 and its the 1.9 (130 bhp) I'm interested in.

I ran a 2006 B6 140 TDI Sport for 48k and an A6 with the 1.9 TDI (110) for 67k. I was happy with both as long distance cars, the B6 has the definite bonus of being an entertaining drive on lesser roads at the expense of a firmer ride (the A6 was not on so-called sports suspension). The B6 140 may prove quieter mechanically than the A6 130.
I suspect the A6 would be more more bullet proof than the B6, there are still plenty around from the late 90s onwards in apparently good nick. That model A6 has much in common with the B5.5 Passat which many on here feel to be a better built, better quality car than the B6.
Agree with JTW the 1.9 130 is likely to be the more economical.

I get around 53-65mpg (stated) from a 2.0 TDi B6 with 6 speed DSG auto.
I would say the engine is practically silent above 45 mph, and with the right tyres, road noise very low too.
It's an SE and the ride is the comfortable side of firm.

You will have to tell me your secret, Europa, the best I get is 48 overall - and I cetainly don't hammer it. :(

Certainly mate !
I don't thrash the car either, but i'm not shy with the throttle when i can make a safe motorway join/junction exit etc... the low down torque on these is simply brilliant.
I use cruise where i can, and when the engine is cold, i'm pretty lightfooted for first 10 mins till warmed up.
Using a TDi hard when cold is a total overall mpg killer.
It gave 68mpg the other night, heathrow to sussex, and i never go below 70 on the motorway!
Hope that helps.
Has anyone gone over 900 miles predicted range on a full tank?

If by 'predicted' you mean what was shown on the MFD, I once saw 950. Sorry for poor photo. I also got 55mpg plus on a regular basis easily. I usually put this down to careful acceleration, but didn't hang around once I got up to speed, just drive smoothly.

We have virtually identical models, although mine is an estate, with 29K & at present, Dunlops. My driving is much as you describe for your own. I agree, torque is brilliant, making driving a pleasure.
Best I have seen is 705 miles on predicted range. Are all your figures from the MFD or do you do brim to brim calcs? (I understand there is a difference, but I have yet to check)

I must have a lead boot on when I drive. I haven't got over 550 miles out of a tank yet. The worse i have had is 460. I used to get 56mpg out of my 320d. I think I must be using every one of the 170 horses too often :Blush2:
