Sorry for what might be a stupid question. .
done a few search's for the answer to no avail. ;'(
My 56 A4 2.0 Petrol Multi is due for change and
I have on order a A4 Avant 2.0tdi 170. Do you run the engine in for a set amount of miles/driving style..
Or just get in and give it some??:aargh4:
Great Forum...
Cheers..

Just drive it normally from day 1. It will already have been run to max revs at the factory!

From owner's manual:
A new vehicle should be run in over a distance of 1,500 km. For the
first 1,000 km the engine speed should not exceed 2/3 of the
maximum permissible engine speed – do not use full throttle and do
not tow a trailer or caravan. From 1,000 to 1,500 km you can gradually
increase the engine rpm and road speed.
During its first few hours of running, the internal friction in the
engine is greater than later on when all the moving parts have
bedded down.
How the vehicle is driven for the first 1,500 km also influences the
engine quality. After the first 1,500 km you should continue driving
at moderate engine speeds, in particular when the engine is cold.
This helps to reduce wear and tear on the engine and increases the
potential mileage which can be covered by the engine.

I have read that the first 50 miles determine how the engine will behave in later life. If an engine is allowed to idle for long period when brand new, the tiny ridges of the cylinder honing marks get polished, ultimately leading to bore glazing leading to very extended piston ring bed-in.
It is also said by many, that the very high quality synthetic oils used by VW/Audi further slow the bedding in of cylinder bores.
So in the first 30-50 miles, it is good to run the engine periodically at say 2/3 of the engine revs say up to 3200 which is supposed to ease thi initial bed-in of the bores and rings.
That said, I have had 2 Audi diesels and can honestly say that my 2.0 TDI 140 din't run economically until nearly 20K miles.
I took delivery of my 2.0 TDi 170 in October and even now, with 5k on the clock, I'm reluctant to "give it some". With the torque available from about 2000 rpm the car is deceptively fast and I rarely get anywhere near the redline. I suppose I'm a bit old fashioned and like to treat the car gently for the first few miles.............
Having said that, its your car, get out there and give it a good thrashing :biglaugh:

I heard it was pretty important to rag deisels from the off to get the rings to seal.
Don't know though a I've never owned a car fueled by the devil's juice! ;)
